Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Heritage Sites (7 Feb 2019)

Kevin Moran: I appreciate that and I thank the Deputy. I met the heritage group and I am aware of what it is trying to do. I like to work with such groups that have shown the enthusiasm to make things happen, and that is what I intend to do. We are working with the other Department to make it happen.

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: National Monuments (7 Feb 2019)

Kevin Moran: Public access to the historic St. Colmcille's house in Kells was previously available through a local keyholder who lived near the site. This system worked well for many years, with a significant number of visitors gaining entry and good positive feedback being received from them. However, the person in question retired unexpectedly from the post early last year and has not yet been...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: National Monuments (7 Feb 2019)

Kevin Moran: I appreciate fully where the Deputy is coming from, but it is not fair to say the OPW is not engaging with the local authority and the tourism group. We had a meeting in my office just before Christmas and hope to advance the matter to a conclusion shortly.

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: National Monuments (7 Feb 2019)

Kevin Moran: Certainly, I acknowledge all of the good work they have done throughout the country. The matter the Deputy has raised in his question was brought to my attention just before Christmas. Once I had the meeting, I commenced to move it to a successful conclusion. We are working closely with the parties involved. The Minister of State at the Department of Housing, Planning and Local...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: National Monuments (7 Feb 2019)

Kevin Moran: The Deputy might have brought it to the attention of officials, but if he brings it to my attention, I will act. No matter what Member comes to me with a query, I will follow it up. If it is placed in front of me like the matter in Kells, I will deal with it. I appreciate that it was brought forward.

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: River Basin Management Plans (7 Feb 2019)

Kevin Moran: Let me say the following. The Deputy has asked me to visit the neck of the woods mentioned to see if something can be sorted out. That is a commitment I will give him. Later in the year I hope to meet him and other Members from the area.

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: River Basin Management Plans (7 Feb 2019)

Kevin Moran: I am glad that the Ceann Comhairle thinks of me in that way. Additional information not given on the floor of the House Historically, flood risk management focused on the arterial drainage of river catchments to improve agricultural land. The maintenance of arterial and drainage district channels, as designated under the Arterial Drainage Act 1945, is the responsibility of the OPW and local...

Vote 13 - Office of Public Works (Revised)
(12 Feb 2019)

Kevin Moran: As Minister of State at the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform with special responsibility for the Office of Public Works, OPW, and flood relief, I welcome the opportunity to come before this committee to discuss the functions of the OPW and its 2019 gross allocation of just under €467 million. Within this allocation, programme A, which relates to flood risk management,...

Select Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Estimates for Public Services 2019
Vote 13 - Office of Public Works (Revised)
(12 Feb 2019)

Kevin Moran: My Department has received no information on funding from the Cabinet. However, it has been widely flagged that a number of Departments have been asked about cutbacks in allocations. The information given to my Department is that a figure of €3 million is with the Cabinet, but I have received no information back on it. We have no role whatsoever in the children's hospital project....

Select Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Estimates for Public Services 2019
Vote 13 - Office of Public Works (Revised)
(12 Feb 2019)

Kevin Moran: My answer is we have no role in the children's hospital project. The chairman can deal with the other question. On construction inflation, costs have gone up by 3.95% nationally. This will have an impact when we price a job. For example, on a scheme we announced some time ago we saw that because of inflation some extra funding might be required. My apologies - I think I am reading it...

Select Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Estimates for Public Services 2019
Vote 13 - Office of Public Works (Revised)
(12 Feb 2019)

Kevin Moran: Expenditure of €15 million was provided for the works on Leinster House. Having seen the work on a tour with Members today, the amount of work involved is apparent. The figure will exceed €15 million but I do not know by how much. A certain amount of work was not foreseen. This is evident when one peels back the lead flashing to see the damage, particularly around the...

Select Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Estimates for Public Services 2019
Vote 13 - Office of Public Works (Revised)
(12 Feb 2019)

Kevin Moran: It would be wrong for me to give a figure at this time. Faults were found when the flooring was peeled back and work was needed to address them. The ceilings had to be pinned up again, which takes time. Leinster House is a protected structure so the work is time consuming and costly.
