- Questions on Promised Legislation (26 Oct 2017)
Martin Kenny: The programme for Government states very clearly the Government wants to deal with the housing and homelessness crisis across the country. While homelessness in the city of Dublin in particular is very evident because we all see it in front of us, homelessness in rural counties such as Leitrim, where I come from, is equally as big a problem but is not so apparent. We have people coming into...
- National Planning Framework: Statements (Resumed) (26 Oct 2017)
Martin Kenny: Ireland 2040 plans for where we will be about 22 years from now. As Deputy Connolly has said, there is much in the document to be welcomed. There is much in it that is very aspirational, that is very good and that we want to see happen. An awful lot of it is very vague, however. That is one of the problems I have with it. I am thinking of the sections on agriculture, forestry, tourism...

- Order of Business (7 Nov 2017)
Martin Kenny: Page 98 of the programme for Government contains a commitment to building successful rural and community policing. At a recent meeting of the joint policing committee in Leitrim, we discussed the problem of burglaries. An issue came up at that meeting which has also been debated in this House and elsewhere. It was agreed by senior gardaí that there is an issue with cash for gold shops...

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Upcoming CAP Negotiations: Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (7 Nov 2017)
Martin Kenny: I thank the Chair, and I welcome the witnesses and thank them for their time and their contributions. CAP from its outset was meant to provide cheap food to the European market. It has changed its emphasis over the years and has now become more about providing a very high-quality product or high-quality food. It is now more focused on that and on issues of environmental sustainability....

- Priority Questions: Fodder Crisis (8 Nov 2017)
Martin Kenny: This is the same question I put to the Minister on the previous occasion we had questions in the House. A fodder crisis is developing and has already developed in the north west and along the western seaboard. Deputy Scanlon has tabled a similar question to mine on this. The one thing we would like to get from the Minister today is his agreement that there is a crisis and that something...
- Priority Questions: Fodder Crisis (8 Nov 2017)
Martin Kenny: The telling statement from the Minister is that there are no plans at present. I hope that means he is monitoring the situation closely and that something will be done. The vast majority of farmers in the north west, who are mainly suckler farmers, are already experiencing an income crisis. They are getting such a poor price for their product that they find themselves under huge pressure....

Martin Kenny: It is too expensive.
- Priority Questions: Fodder Crisis (8 Nov 2017)
Martin Kenny: It always seems to be the case that the main point is missed out. We know it is being monitored by Teagasc people on the ground, and in fairness, they are advising farmers and working alongside them and doing their best. What is needed is an acknowledgement that something should be put in place to reassure farmers and inform them that they have an option for the future and that something...
