Seanad: Order of Business (14 Oct 2014)

Terry Leyden: I would like to join in the very warm welcome to Senator Gerard Craughwell on his membership of Seanad Éireann and to welcome him to this House. I congratulate him, his wife Helen, his son David and his daughter Rebecca on this great achievement for the family. Senator Craughwell is a former president of the Teachers' Union of Ireland from 2012 to 2014. He played a very important role...

Seanad: Order of Business (14 Oct 2014)

Terry Leyden: Let me say this. He played a very important role in the constituency of Roscommon-South Leitrim and the other constituency. I can assure the House that I have never come across a more popular leader in Fianna Fáil in my time and I have served under five or six of them.

Seanad: Order of Business (14 Oct 2014)

Terry Leyden: If anyone has any doubts about his continued leadership of the Fianna Fáil party, he is going to lead us into the next election and will be successful then.

Seanad: Order of Business (14 Oct 2014)

Terry Leyden: Hear, hear.

Seanad: Order of Business (14 Oct 2014)

Terry Leyden: Is the Leader announcing the budget?

Seanad: Order of Business (15 Oct 2014)

Terry Leyden: The fact the Government followed the four year plan devised by the late Brian Lenihan is evident that success will come. If one reads through the plan it can be seen the Government followed it diligently and that success is starting to come, whether now or in the future. The elections last Friday were a wake-up call for the two parties in government.

Seanad: Order of Business (15 Oct 2014)

Terry Leyden: Neither Fine Gael nor Labour could come close to winning either of the seats. On that basis, there will be a wipeout of the Labour Party. This is unfortunate because I like the Labour Party. They are nice people.

Seanad: Order of Business (15 Oct 2014)

Terry Leyden: We were very good in government together and on many occasions. We brought in free university education-----

Seanad: Order of Business (15 Oct 2014)

Seanad: Order of Business (15 Oct 2014)

Terry Leyden: Below-cost selling has not been tackled in the budget. This is causing great difficulty in the industry and should be looked at prior to Christmas because it is quite evident the major supermarkets are involved in below-cost selling of alcohol, which leads to other social problems and should be tackled. There was no reason for it not to be tackled in the budget. There is no plan to restore...

Seanad: Order of Business (15 Oct 2014)

Terry Leyden: -----which was followed on Saturday with the water charges protest. The people will realise on 1 January, when the bills start coming in for water charges, that everything in this budget will be eliminated and any advantage will be gone.

Seanad: Order of Business (16 Oct 2014)

Terry Leyden: It was not very bright of him.

Seanad: Order of Business (16 Oct 2014)

Terry Leyden: Panic measures.

Seanad: Order of Business (16 Oct 2014)

Terry Leyden: I am not surprised there is a Fine Gael revolt over Irish Water as the management of the company is an absolute disaster. I do not concur with the terribly disparaging remarks made by Deputy Lawlor about the chief executive which are not repeatable in the House.

Seanad: Order of Business (16 Oct 2014)

Terry Leyden: The revolt taking place is a result of the two by-elections at the weekend.

Seanad: Order of Business (16 Oct 2014)

Terry Leyden: On Sunday the Government decided to introduce panic measures to alleviate the political damage caused to Fine Gael and the Labour Party. In Roscommon 20,000 people are on boil water notices. Commitments were given by the Fine Gael candidate that no charge would apply to these 20,000 people. This was not mentioned in the budget or in any press release since from Irish Water. This was an...

Seanad: Order of Business (16 Oct 2014)

Terry Leyden: The Government has now moved in this direction. A total of 200,000 low income and unemployed families will receive no allowance under the budget, which will be redrawn in days of being announced with great fanfare. Pensioners with a taxable income who qualify for the household benefits package will benefit from the budget but not unemployed people. The Government will have to review in the...

Seanad: Order of Business (16 Oct 2014)

Terry Leyden: Another complication-----

Seanad: Order of Business (16 Oct 2014)

Terry Leyden: Will the chief executive of Irish Water come to the house and respond? The Minister, Deputy Kelly, has no knowledge whatsoever. He is absolutely redundant as far as this issue is concerned. The poor fellow has no clue as far as Irish Water is concerned.

Seanad: Order of Business (16 Oct 2014)

Terry Leyden: It is the most amazing thing. I have never come across such incompetent Ministers in the history of the State than those appointed in the reshuffle.
