Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Urban Regeneration and Housing (Amendment) Bill 2018: Discussion (28 Mar 2019)

Mick Wallace: In reply to Deputy Boyd Barrett's question, we are not looking at others. There is a reason why most of Europe does not have our housing problems. Most of Europe does not have such a dysfunctional manner of supplying housing and we should look at those countries more closely to see what they are at. Land prices will drop dramatically if this legislation is passed. I guarantee they will...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Urban Regeneration and Housing (Amendment) Bill 2018: Discussion (28 Mar 2019)

Mick Wallace: From the day we bought it to the time we were digging the ground, it was close to two years, as always. Then it took approximately two years to build.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Urban Regeneration and Housing (Amendment) Bill 2018: Discussion (28 Mar 2019)

Mick Wallace: It is much quicker to get started on housing than apartments. Housing is very much like Lego. It is far simpler. Apartments present more of a civil engineering challenge than housing. A builder can buy a site for housing, get it designed, get permission and start it in a little over a year or 15 months. Perhaps Mr. Reynolds would disagree.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Urban Regeneration and Housing (Amendment) Bill 2018: Discussion (28 Mar 2019)

Mick Wallace: The Chairman made a point about the Cherrywood apartments. I said there are no builders building in the town at the moment. Let us suppose a builder looks at a site in Dublin city today. The major problem is that whoever owns it wants a given amount of money for it. Much of the Cherrywood land we talked about earlier was bought for peanuts from NAMA at an early stage.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Urban Regeneration and Housing (Amendment) Bill 2018: Discussion (28 Mar 2019)

Mick Wallace: Yes, but if I could buy for €27,000 per unit, I could happily build all the apartments anyone wants.

Agrifood Market Priorities post Brexit: Statements (3 Apr 2019)

Mick Wallace: I agree with Deputy Penrose's final sentiment. If Brexit turns out to be much nicer than we think, I will not give the Government the credit for it but if it turns out to be a disaster, I will not blame it either because we are in the hands of the Brits and they do not even know what they want themselves. It will not be our fault or credit. The Minister said developing new markets and...

Agrifood Market Priorities post Brexit: Statements (3 Apr 2019)

Mick Wallace: The Italians would give the Minister a few lessons on handling the EU fellows. A sizeable sector of the farming community wants to do things differently.

Agrifood Market Priorities post Brexit: Statements (3 Apr 2019)

Mick Wallace: I am. I will let Deputy Pringle in shortly. This sector is being forced to do it without the Department and sometimes it involves conflict for them with the Government, the big farmers, the big processors and the retailers. The Talamh Beo group set up in Galway recently is a perfect example. It sees what is at stake and what needs to change. A member of the group, Fergal Anderson,...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Implementation of the General Data Protection Regulation: Data Protection Commission (3 Apr 2019)

Mick Wallace: I thank the witnesses for coming in. My apologies but I am a bit hoarse. We have talked about this stuff for nearly two years but it seems like a lifetime and yet I still do not understand it all. I do not envy the delegation their jobs. I would rather be pouring concrete in my bare feet than do their job. I have prepared a number of questions, which are a criticism and simply seek more...
