Transport 21: Statements (Resumed) (9 Nov 2006)

Pat Carey: I endorse the laudatory comments made by Deputy Finian McGrath on the virtues of Griffith Avenue and surrounding areas. The importance of Transport 21 is that for the first time here we see a critical shift in transport policy, away from roads towards public transport. In this regard, I make no secret of the fact that we in the Dublin North-West constituency welcome the initiative taken by...

Transport 21: Statements (Resumed) (9 Nov 2006)

Pat Carey: I also welcome the initiative taken by the Government to neutralise the value of land below 10 metres. This will be helpful. I agree it is important that the major part of the system will be tunnelled. My area will discuss concerns with the RPA on Friday. The idea that any part of the metro system could be erected on stilts or above ground level is, I suggest to the Minister,...

Estimates for Public Services 2007: Motion (Resumed) (22 Nov 2006)

Pat Carey: If Fine Gael were in power, it would turn the prisons into boot camps.

Estimates for Public Services 2007: Motion (Resumed) (22 Nov 2006)

Pat Carey: Earlier today I attended, with some of my colleagues, the launch of the consultation on metro west, the last major project of Transport 21 to be announced. In the Estimates this year the Minister has allocated €770 million for investment in public transport, a 58% increase on last year's Estimate. This time last year, when Transport 21 was announced, people said it would never see the...

Estimates for Public Services 2007: Motion (Resumed) (22 Nov 2006)

Pat Carey: I am sure they are glued to monitors as I speak. They effectively suggest the introduction of boot camps run by members of the Defence Forces. One Fine Gael representative, whom I know quite well and for whom I have much respect, proposes that deviant people, adults or children, be ghettoised in one part of the city. I hope Fine Gael is simply being facetious because if that is a real...

Estimates for Public Services 2007: Motion (Resumed) (22 Nov 2006)

Pat Carey: There is an increase of €16 million in funding for the youth justice service. The crime diversion programmes, as Deputy O'Sullivan knows better than I, thrive throughout the country. I have been critical of some and repeat that each should have two workers because employing a single worker is insufficient and represents bad practice. It is important to place young people in the care of...

Housing Policy: Motion (Resumed). (22 Nov 2006)

Pat Carey: I welcome the opportunity to address this issue. There is no doubt that it has occupied more talking time in the House than almost any other topic. Before I came into the House I saw the Labour Party as the party of fresh, new and ambitious ideas but the motion tabled tonight lacks ambition, fresh ideas and vision, though I do not disagree with a lot of it. I will raise a few points that...

Housing Policy: Motion (Resumed). (22 Nov 2006)

Pat Carey: For example, RTE must have 25 or 30 acres of land adjoining its single storey building with lots of car parking spaces. It is impossible to buy a house in that area, affordable or otherwise. Should that be compulsorily acquired? I do not think so but I would like it to be argued. I am sorry there is nothing fresh, ambitious or new in what the Labour Party has to offer.

Written Answers — National Debt: National Debt (22 Nov 2006)

Pat Carey: Question 117: To ask the Minister for Finance the level of the national debt as a share of national income in 2006; the way this compares to 1997; the share of income tax revenues required to service the debt today compared to 1997; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
