- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy in Education: Discussion (Resumed) (22 Nov 2022)
Micheál Carrigy: I thank the Minister for the work he has done in this area. I know it is something that is personal to himself. As I said, it is great to see the funding that has been put in place in the various universities. I concur with other members and with the Minister that the reality is that when we have a model that is working and is seen to work, and we heard that at our previous session, we...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy in Education: Discussion (Resumed) (22 Nov 2022)
Micheál Carrigy: That is positive. Earlier, we passed a report on the 2023 summer programme. We are seeking changes to ensure that, at a minimum, every special school has a school-based summer programme, avoiding the unacceptable situation of more than 6,000 children with higher needs not getting a summer programme. One of our proposals to the Department of Education was to expand the range of professions...

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy in Education: Discussion (Resumed) (22 Nov 2022)
Micheál Carrigy: I refer in particular to what we discussed with DCU, Trinity and SOLAS during our first session. A further conversation needs to be had with those groups. I strongly believe that we should replicate what has already been successful instead of looking for new proposals. The model works. It provides employment in a large number of companies. We were shown a list, from which we saw that...
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (30 Nov 2022)
Micheál Carrigy: I concur with a number of Senator Currie's comments on special education. I welcome the review which will take place and is being launched by the Minister of State at the Department of Education, Deputy Madigan, with regard to school places. Regarding the Joint Committee on Autism still has a number of months to meet, so it is not due to finish shortly. We are publishing an early report...

- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Future Business Model Plans and Long-term Vision for the Media Sector: Discussion (24 Nov 2022)
Micheál Carrigy: I welcome everyone here. I have engaged with some of them over the past 12 months while myself and my party colleagues, Deputies Cannon and Bruton and Senator Buttimer, put together our submission to the commission on behalf of Fine Gael. The VAT reduction is very welcome and was supported by all parties and none. I would support the reduction, if not the abolition, of the levy. The...
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Future Business Model Plans and Long-term Vision for the Media Sector: Discussion (24 Nov 2022)
Micheál Carrigy: On that, should it be the case that with the college degree and work experience they could link in with the various media groups throughout the college period and get that practical work experience while in college, rather than coming out more raw by not having done that? Is that something that could be done?
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Future Business Model Plans and Long-term Vision for the Media Sector: Discussion (24 Nov 2022)
Micheál Carrigy: I have one point to make and a quote to read. I forget who made one comment earlier, but it concerned shops not carrying the newspapers. I am a small retailer and I carry newspapers. I have had varying experiences, including having to get a second delivery company to supply one particular paper, at a high cost to me, just to be able to carry that one publication, despite my own distributor...
- Seanad: National Tourism Development Authority (Amendment) Bill 2022: Second Stage (6 Dec 2022)
Micheál Carrigy: The Minister is welcome. I also commend and fully support the Bill. Tourism has been one of the major success stories in the country with significant investment being made. It is important that we insulate and nurture it because the figures seem to be going in the right direction but we have to make sure that continues. We have so many things going positively for tourism, but there are...
- Seanad: Online Safety and Media Regulation Bill 2022: [Seanad Bill amended by the Dáil] Report and Final Stages (6 Dec 2022)
Micheál Carrigy: I have similar comments to make. I welcome the fact this has been put in place. As Senator Cassells said, this was a strong recommendation from the committee after pre-legislative scrutiny. There was discussion of the matter in the House and, as the Senator said, the Minister committed to coming back and discussing the matter. I am glad to see this has been implemented because it is...
- Seanad: Online Safety and Media Regulation Bill 2022: [Seanad Bill amended by the Dáil] Report and Final Stages (6 Dec 2022)
Micheál Carrigy: Perhaps the Minister will expand on that point. Is the Minister saying the Bill will give the commission the authority to change the situation and allow for party political programmes outside of an electoral period?
- Seanad: Online Safety and Media Regulation Bill 2022: [Seanad Bill amended by the Dáil] Report and Final Stages (6 Dec 2022)
Micheál Carrigy: I concur with the comments that have been made. This is a welcome group. The 20x20 campaign, which was mainly focused on sport, increased female participation in sport and the number of female broadcasters across all sports. It is welcome to see this provision in the Bill.
- Seanad: Online Safety and Media Regulation Bill 2022: [Seanad Bill amended by the Dáil] Report and Final Stages (6 Dec 2022)
Micheál Carrigy: I support the recommendations and acknowledge the fact that a percentage of this funding will be available to independent producers. That funding will be there to make sure we have a large percentage of Irish language content, which is extremely important. The Minister mentioned the sound and vision fund. I thank her for the extra funding of €2.5 million that has been added to that...
