Lorraine Clifford Lee: Many workers live in licensed accommodation within landlords' houses, which the amendment sought to address. I do not wish to delay the passage of the legislation, although I am disappointed that the Minister did not accept it.

Lorraine Clifford Lee: I move amendment No. 31: In page 21, between lines 5 and 6, to insert the following: “Amendment of Nurses and Midwives Act 2011 15. Lorraine Clifford Lee: I accept the Minister's explanation. I am anxious that these people, who have trained under a similar regime to nurses and midwives who have trained in Ireland, would be accepted back. Hopefully the Minister for Health can work with the registration board to make sure these people who are answering this call to arms can come back into the system. On that basis, I will withdraw the amendment.

Lorraine Clifford Lee: I move amendment No. 32: In page 21, line 19, after “Covid-19” to insert “having regard for the vindication of the rights of patients while minimising the care burden”. These amendments, and some following amendments, are linked to the changes to the Mental Health Act 2001. The amendments put further safeguards for very vulnerable patients during this time of...

- Seanad: Election of Cathaoirleach (29 Jun 2020)
Lorraine Clifford-Lee: I congratulate the Cathaoirleach on his great victory here today. Many of our colleagues have made reference to his political career but I would like to stretch back to before that political career and make reference to his reality television career. Some in the House may not know that the Cathaoirleach was in Treasure Island on RTÉ, which was the far more innocent precursor to Love Island.
- Seanad: Election of Cathaoirleach (29 Jun 2020)
Lorraine Clifford-Lee: The Cathaoirleach came third on Treasure Island. Thankfully, he has become better at winning elections since then and has not come third since, only first. He came first today and is now sitting in the Chair. I wish him the very best of luck. He is deeply committed to public service and I know he will do an excellent job. I am very proud that he was the Fianna Fáil nominee today. I...
- Seanad: Offences against the State (Amendment) Act 1998 and Criminal Justice (Amendment) Act 2009: Motions (29 Jun 2020)
Lorraine Clifford-Lee: I will be very brief because I know we have to get the legislation passed as urgently as possible. I welcome the Minister to the House and congratulate her on her appointment. This is very important legislation. The Minister outlined the very real threats posed by gangland activities and terrorist organisations working on this island. These are threats to our security - the security of...
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (7 Jul 2020)
Lorraine Clifford-Lee: I raise the issue of the extended maternity leave campaign. I back the very sensible proposal made by my colleague, Senator Fitzpatrick, to refer the issue from this House to the Covid committee. It is a very important issue for thousands of families right across the country. Thousands of babies were born just before or during lockdown and maternity leave is running out for their parents....
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (24 Jul 2020)
Lorraine Clifford-Lee: I raise a very important issue today. It is one I raised on a number of occasions in the previous Seanad, namely, period poverty. For those who do not know what period poverty is, it is being unable to access sanitary products due to financial constraints. It is a global public health issue and vulnerable women and girls in Ireland today are suffering from period poverty. They cannot...
- Seanad: Health (General Practitioner Service and Alteration of Criteria for Eligibility) Bill 2020: Second Stage (24 Jul 2020)
Lorraine Clifford-Lee: I am sharing time with my colleague, Senator Fitzpatrick. I thank the Minister for bringing this welcome and progressive legislation to the House. I believe it deserves, and will have, broad support from the House. The Minister has a personal commitment to better access to public healthcare and this allows people to access healthcare at the point of entry with GPs throughout the country....
- Seanad: Civil Law and Criminal Law (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2020: Second Stage (28 Jul 2020)
Lorraine Clifford-Lee: I welcome the Minister to the House to deal with this very important legislation. As my colleagues, Senators Gallagher and Ward, outlined, it is long overdue. I worked in the legal system for a number of years and faced many of the frustrations that the Bill seeks to address. It is very welcome, although it is a pity it has taken something like a global pandemic to bring about these...

Lorraine Clifford-Lee: Now.
- Seanad: Regulated Professions (Health and Social Care) (Amendment) Bill 2019: Report and Final Stages (18 Sep 2020)
Lorraine Clifford-Lee: I would like to say a couple of words. It is great that this Bill has been passed. I would like to thank Opposition Members for their contribution, their suggestions and their amendments to the Bill as it passed through these Houses. I thank the Minister of State, Deputy Mary Butler, for her attendance here today. It is a difficult time for all of us but we know that everybody in the...
- Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Health Services Provision (25 Sep 2020)
Lorraine Clifford-Lee: The Minister of State is very welcome to the Chamber and I thank him for responding to this matter. It is fitting that we are here today to talk about access to contraception given that tomorrow, 26 September, is World Contraception Day. As the Minister is aware, a working group on access to contraception was established in April 2019 by the then Minister for Health, Deputy Harris, to...
- Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Health Services Provision (25 Sep 2020)
Lorraine Clifford-Lee: I am very disappointed with the Minister of State's response. I understand the Covid pandemic is causing havoc, particularly for the Department. This issue existed long before Covid so I am very disappointed to hear that no progress at all has been made on it. It is a core issue in the programme for Government. I will be taking it up with the Minister, Deputy Donnelly, to determine...
