- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Online Learning at University: Discussion (3 Dec 2014)
Mary Moran: It is a brilliant way of teaching.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Online Learning at University: Discussion (3 Dec 2014)
Mary Moran: That is what I was bringing up as well about the CPD. What was the reaction to that? Did lecturers embrace that change and the additional time they had to spend? Did the witnesses find there was a great willingness to do that?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Online Learning at University: Discussion (3 Dec 2014)
Mary Moran: I have long argued for the importance of the arts in secondary schools and at all levels of education. That is a huge issue. When the leaving certificate examination in music changed in 1999 music technology was introduced. Music was one of the first subjects in which we could use technology for the leaving certificate. Basically, it must be said that the music technology on the leaving...
- Seanad: Order of Business (4 Dec 2014)
Mary Moran: Yesterday was International Day of Persons with Disabilities. Last night, I was delighted and honoured to attend a co-presentation, by Inclusion Ireland and Down Syndrome Ireland, of the Blue Teapot Theatre Company performance of "Sanctuary". This play, which was written by Christian O'Reilly, explores the intimate relationships between persons with intellectual disabilities and highlights...
- Seanad: Order of Business (9 Dec 2014)
Mary Moran: Cyberbullying and the use of social media has become a topic of debate in recent years. We have had numerous debates on the issue in the Seanad. I have participated in many local talks and attended the launch of many initiatives to deal with the issue of cyberbullying. In recent weeks it has been brought to my attention that people are having great difficulty in making complaints to Twitter...
- Seanad: Order of Business (10 Dec 2014)
Mary Moran: I do not know where to start in discussing last night. On a personal note, because I have a son who often uses respite services in a residential unit, I felt it very deeply, as did many of the parents who contacted me last night. It is sickening to think that our most vulnerable people could be treated like that, left 15 hours without food, force-fed, physically hit, and mentally abused,...
- Seanad: Order of Business (10 Dec 2014)
Mary Moran: I call for the Minister for Health, Deputy Varadkar, to come to the House to discuss the Prime Time programme last night, to tell us what will happen and to have an independent inquiry into what happened. I came to the Seanad three years ago-----
- Seanad: Order of Business (10 Dec 2014)
Mary Moran: -----saying that I would do something for disability. I could not walk out of here today and say I was doing the job if I was not calling for this today.
- Seanad: Order of Business (10 Dec 2014)
Mary Moran: On a point of order, I want to express my disappointment that nobody would second the amendment to have people in for this debate.
- Seanad: Order of Business (10 Dec 2014)
Mary Moran: I find it abhorrent that nobody would second the amendment-----
- Seanad: Order of Business (10 Dec 2014)
Mary Moran: -----that would have allowed a debate on the cruelty and inhumanity that went on last night.
- Seanad: Order of Business (10 Dec 2014)
Mary Moran: No. I find that abhorrent. We are all great at coming in here and making our points but when it comes to actually putting one's money where one's mouth is-----
- Seanad: Order of Business (10 Dec 2014)
Mary Moran: -----nobody would second the amendment. That debate should go ahead today if we are worth anything in this House.
- Seanad: Order of Business (10 Dec 2014)
Mary Moran: Not with the Minister for Health present.
- Seanad: Order of Business (10 Dec 2014)
Mary Moran: You give out about everything but you would not even support a non-political amendment such as that. It is appalling.
- Seanad: Order of Business (10 Dec 2014)
Mary Moran: I have.
- Seanad: Standards of Care in Residential Care Homes: Statements (10 Dec 2014)
Mary Moran: I thank the Minister of State for coming into the House to discuss this issue. I proposed an amendment to the Order of Business this morning. Last night I deliberated long and hard as I knew there would be repercussions and I did not do it lightly. I felt something had to be done and I was very disappointed - I still am - that not one other person in the Chamber seconded the amendment....
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: Role and Functions: All Ireland Institute of Hospice and Palliative Care (11 Dec 2014)
Mary Moran: I, too, am familiar with the institute's excellent work and I know one of the parents actively involved in it, who has been a mainstay. Like Deputy Kitt, I was at the launch and I congratulate Ms Charnley on her work. Could she speak about funding? I ask her also to talk about reaching out into the more rural areas of the country and the support the institute provides there, from Donegal...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: Role and Functions: All Ireland Institute of Hospice and Palliative Care (11 Dec 2014)
Mary Moran: My question is similar. It is specifically about my area of Dundalk and the work with the North Louth Hospice, which provides an excellent service. There is also a service in Newry, which I have visited on many occasions. It, too, provides outstanding care. However, what is the situation for children in that area?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: Role and Functions: All Ireland Institute of Hospice and Palliative Care (11 Dec 2014)
Mary Moran: It was similar to Deputy Conlan's. I asked specifically about my own area between Dundalk and Newry, which are the two hospices that are closest to me. I am also curious about the care for children.
