Seanad: Motor Vehicle (Duties and Licences) Bill 2013: Second Stage (28 Mar 2013)

Pat O'Neill: I welcome the Minister of State to the House. The Bill provides for increases in duties and motor taxation. We again are listening to populist politics from the Opposition. They would not introduce a motor or property tax but if that were so, they would have to increase income tax. This would mean we would have to take the money out of people's income tax and every service would be free....

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Groceries Sector: Discussion (Resumed) (18 Apr 2013)

Pat O'Neill: I welcome Mr. O’Connor and Mr. Mackay for attending. I congratulate them on the 100th Aldi store. I am a Kilkenny person and it is great to see it. I wish Aldi the best of luck in Callan. From Mr. Mackay’s accent I guess that he is Scottish.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Groceries Sector: Discussion (Resumed) (18 Apr 2013)

Pat O'Neill: Gary Mackay was very good to Ireland when he scored a goal against Bulgaria to send us to Germany in 1988. Many of the issues have been dealt with. We are going to get the answer some day from a multiple about gross margins in this country. Aldi is operating in nine countries. Is the gross margin taken out of this country in the top third, the middle third or the bottom third compared to...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Groceries Sector: Discussion (Resumed) (18 Apr 2013)

Pat O'Neill: Potatoes were a good example this year because farmers simply were not able to harvest them, which is reflected in the current price.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Groceries Sector: Discussion (Resumed) (18 Apr 2013)

Pat O'Neill: Many farmers found it very difficult to harvest their potatoes this year. Some of them were tied into contracts to supply a certain number of tonnes to Aldi but the cost of doing so had risen for them. If suppliers in such a situation said to Aldi that their costs had gone up, would Aldi react and agree to pay them more to supply the potatoes, even though their contracts specified a lower price?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Groceries Sector: Discussion (Resumed) (18 Apr 2013)

Pat O'Neill: Of course, Aldi is a business after all.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Groceries Sector: Discussion (Resumed) with FDII and IFA (23 Apr 2013)

Pat O'Neill: I thank Mr. Bryan for his presentation and will raise a couple of matters. While others have dealt with the issue, I refer to hello money. It is very interesting because many of the large multiples have appeared before the joint committee and they all deny it exists. Can the Irish Farmers Association, IFA, bring evidence before the joint committee to prove it still is being sought? One...

Seanad: Order of Business (30 Apr 2013)

Pat O'Neill: We have to get the fodder first.

Seanad: Order of Business (30 Apr 2013)

Pat O'Neill: I would like to be associated with the expressions of sympathy to the Barry and Blaney families. The late Deputies Barry and Blaney gave great service to this country and to public life over many years. May they rest in peace. Senator Cullinane mentioned Waterford and the south east but I remind him that the plant is being built in County Kilkenny. Glanbia is a Kilkenny company with...
