Written Answers — Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht: Natural Heritage Areas Designation (24 Mar 2015)

Anne Ferris: 1004. To ask the Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht her plans to convert the 630 proposed natural heritage areas across the country to full natural heritage areas; the timeframe involved to designate the sites as full national heritage areas; the extent of environmental destruction that may have occurred in the 20 years since these sites were first proposed for full protection; and...

Climate Action and Low Carbon Development Bill 2015: Second Stage (Resumed) (25 Mar 2015)

Anne Ferris: There is a very well-known and very old saying, attributed to the Greek philosopher Aristotle, that one swallow will never make a summer. That proverb has relevance to this climate change debate, in more ways than one. The behaviour of migratory birds is studied a lot by climate change experts. When birds travel thousands of miles, weather patterns influence their behaviour. Birdwatch...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Annual Policing Plan 2015: Garda Commissioner (25 Mar 2015)

Anne Ferris: I had two questions but Senator Conway gave me an idea in regard to his question on whether there were any plans to close down more rural stations. Does the Commissioner have any plans to reopen stations that have been closed down in recent years?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Annual Policing Plan 2015: Garda Commissioner (25 Mar 2015)

Anne Ferris: The Commissioner referred to gardaí being out on their beat. It is very important to people in towns, villages and in rural areas to see high visibility policing on the street. I am a great fan of the joint policing committees, JPCs. I have been a member and still am a member of the committees in Wicklow. The Commissioner is intending to enhance the roles of the joint policing...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Annual Policing Plan 2015: Garda Commissioner (25 Mar 2015)

Anne Ferris: That would be great because certainly in Bray we get text alerts if there is going to be flooding, so it would be a great idea for that kind of thing to be run by the JPC. The committee published its report on domestic and sexual violence last year and I was the rapporteur of that committee. We made a number of suggestions because many victims were very concerned at the way statements and...

Written Answers — Department of Health: HIQA Investigations (31 Mar 2015)

Anne Ferris: 436. To ask the Minister for Health in the interest of child protection, if his Department has sought to ensure the publication of the Health Information and Quality Authority report into the death of infants at Portlaoise hospital in County Laois; his views, from a child protection perspective, on the recent reports that the Health Service Executive is attempting to block such publication;...

Written Answers — Department of Health: HIQA Investigations (31 Mar 2015)

Anne Ferris: 443. To ask the Minister for Health his views on the independent status of the Health Information and Quality Authority; his further views on the importance of maintaining the independence of the authority in terms of maintaining public credibility in its effectiveness in reporting and in terms of the legal necessity to allow it sufficient autonomy to carry out its important oversight,...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Undocumented Migrants: Immigration Control Platform (1 Apr 2015)

Anne Ferris: I would like to ask Iníon Ní Chonaill and Mr. Neville through the Chair if they are Irish citizens.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Undocumented Migrants: Immigration Control Platform (1 Apr 2015)

Anne Ferris: My second question is, do you consider yourselves Christians?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Undocumented Migrants: Immigration Control Platform (1 Apr 2015)

Anne Ferris: It is just something I want to say, Chairman. This day two weeks ago I was in Poland and visited Auschwitz. I certainly feel that there is a common thread between reading this statement and what I heard and learned in Auschwitz.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Undocumented Migrants: Immigration Control Platform (1 Apr 2015)

Anne Ferris: I find, and another member has said she finds, that your statement is - through the Chair - outrageous.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Undocumented Migrants: Immigration Control Platform (1 Apr 2015)

Anne Ferris: I will withdraw it, Chairman, but what I will say is that there are people in this country we have met, I have certainly met a lot of them here, that are called "illegals" by this organisation among other things, reading between the lines. I regretfully withdraw the statement because you asked me to do so but that is the way I feel.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Undocumented Migrants: Immigration Control Platform (1 Apr 2015)

Anne Ferris: That is rubbish.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Undocumented Migrants: Immigration Control Platform (1 Apr 2015)

Anne Ferris: That is an allegation I would like Mr. Neville to withdraw.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Undocumented Migrants: Immigration Control Platform (1 Apr 2015)

Anne Ferris: Where is the proof of that?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Undocumented Migrants: Immigration Control Platform (1 Apr 2015)

Anne Ferris: Where is the proof that I or any member here has signed the pledge?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Undocumented Migrants: Immigration Control Platform (1 Apr 2015)

Anne Ferris: That is absolutely ridiculous.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Undocumented Migrants: Immigration Control Platform (1 Apr 2015)

Anne Ferris: Those are only the people who ring Deputy McGrath.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Undocumented Migrants: Immigration Control Platform (1 Apr 2015)

Anne Ferris: The opening statement refers to the obligation of the State to defend its borders. Ms Ní Chonaill said in her opening statement that dealing with illegal immigration was part of the defence of borders. I would like to ask the witnesses what sort of defences they would like the State to put in place.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Undocumented Migrants: Immigration Control Platform (1 Apr 2015)

Anne Ferris: Sorry, it was not quite clear because from my reading, I did not know whether Ms Ní Chonaill wanted the Army patrolling the borders or stopping illegals from coming in. In other words, Ms Ní Chonaill is just talking about putting stuff up on a website, as was said earlier, and perhaps asking neighbours to complain about their next door neighbours if they know they are not here...
