Housing (Amendment) Bill 2013: Second Stage (Resumed) (9 May 2013)

Gerald Nash: I am pleased to have the opportunity to speak on this technical Bill. Housing, and public housing in particular, has been of concern to me for some time and was one of the core reasons for my entry into public life 14 years ago. Having a place to call home involves much more than bricks and mortar. It involves building communities. We spend so much money each year bailing out private...

Housing (Amendment) Bill 2013: Second Stage (Resumed) (9 May 2013)

Gerald Nash: Indeed, and some of the most responsible citizens.

Housing (Amendment) Bill 2013: Second Stage (Resumed) (9 May 2013)

Gerald Nash: By building local authority houses we also give people the aspiration to own their own homes, which is important. If we are to build a series of local authority housing developments we need to be sure to ring-fence the proceeds of those sales to ensure we continue to reinvest in replenishing and replacing the local authority housing stock that we are removing. I accept and appreciate the...

Public Accounts Committee: Business of Committee (9 May 2013)

Gerald Nash: Who are those individuals?

Leaders' Questions (16 May 2013)

Gerald Nash: There is much concern for Our Lady's Hospital.

Topical Issue Debate: Mortgage Arrears Proposals (21 May 2013)

Gerald Nash: I am glad to have this opportunity to raise this issue of the pilot scheme announced last week by the Central Bank last week for dealing with distressed mortgages. No Member would argue that such a scheme is not badly needed. It is, indeed, long overdue. However, one point that galls ordinary people most is not just the appalling behaviour of the banks prior to the crash, but their...

Topical Issue Debate: Mortgage Arrears Proposals (21 May 2013)

Gerald Nash: Credit unions which have served the ordinary people so well over the years are being pushed back out of sight and out of mind and they will soon be out of pocket. It is immoral that the banks, which contributed hugely to the debt crisis we are in through reckless lending, should receive primary protection while community-based credit unions, which have consistently encouraged responsible...

Topical Issue Debate: Mortgage Arrears Proposals (21 May 2013)

Gerald Nash: I thank the Minister of State for his comprehensive reply. The pilot framework will be initiated in June and I wish this process well. It forms part of the Government's holistic approach to dealing with personal indebtedness and mortgage arrears, in particular, which have bedevilled the country for too long. The Government is trying to take a coherent, co-ordinated and comprehensive...

Written Answers — Department of Health: Health Services Provision (21 May 2013)

Gerald Nash: 614. To ask the Minister for Health if he will consider including a medical product (details supplied) on the list of reimbursable items; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23733/13]

Written Answers — Department of Health: Long-Term Illness Scheme Coverage (21 May 2013)

Gerald Nash: 618. To ask the Minister for Health if he will consider including Addison's disease to the list under the terms of the long-term illness scheme; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23743/13]

Ireland and the Eurozone: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members] (22 May 2013)

Gerald Nash: I am happy to respond to the motion. Specifically, I am glad to have the opportunity to nail some of the myths and distortions that have grown about Europe, generated by a bizarre collection of populists, fantasists and conspiracy theorists across the Continent and in this country. If ever I begin to doubt my position on Europe, I take a quick look around the Continent and listen to those...

Public Accounts Committee: Business of Committee (23 May 2013)

Gerald Nash: I assume the meeting will be held in public session.

Public Accounts Committee: 2011 Annual Report of the Comptroller and Auditor General and Appropriation Accounts
Vote 10 - Office of Public Works
(23 May 2013)

Gerald Nash: I welcome Ms McGrath and her colleagues from the Office of Public Works. In the first instance, I wish to raise a matter which is not necessarily germane to the appropriation account for 2011. In that context, I want to focus on the correspondence received from the Office of Public Works, dated 16 May, in respect of the cost of the provision of a suite of offices for the then Minister of...

Public Accounts Committee: 2011 Annual Report of the Comptroller and Auditor General and Appropriation Accounts
Vote 10 - Office of Public Works
(23 May 2013)

Gerald Nash: I would like to pose some questions in respect of the correspondence dated 16 May.

Public Accounts Committee: 2011 Annual Report of the Comptroller and Auditor General and Appropriation Accounts
Vote 10 - Office of Public Works
(23 May 2013)

Gerald Nash: As already stated, I wish to focus on the item of correspondence to which I refer and which the committee very much appreciates receiving. In 2007 Bertie Ahern appointed a certain Deputy as one of three Ministers of State in the then Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment. On taking up his appointment, the Deputy in question discovered that he had nowhere to locate himself for what...

Public Accounts Committee: 2011 Annual Report of the Comptroller and Auditor General and Appropriation Accounts
Vote 10 - Office of Public Works
(23 May 2013)

Gerald Nash: Okay.

Public Accounts Committee: 2011 Annual Report of the Comptroller and Auditor General and Appropriation Accounts
Vote 10 - Office of Public Works
(23 May 2013)

Gerald Nash: I understand. Point No. 9 in the letter dated 16 May states that all existing suites in the relevant building were occupied. Will Ms McGrath indicate whether any civil servants who may have occupied rooms 118A and 119A were obliged to move in order to accommodate the then Minister of State and his staff? For what was that particular suite of offices used at the time?

Public Accounts Committee: 2011 Annual Report of the Comptroller and Auditor General and Appropriation Accounts
Vote 10 - Office of Public Works
(23 May 2013)

Gerald Nash: Ultimately, the suite of offices in question was divided up into a large office space for the then Minister of State and four staff and a holding area to keep people away from him - in other words, there was no direct access to his office. I understand this is fairly standard practice within the Office of Public Works when accommodating Ministers or Ministers of State. It has been well...

Public Accounts Committee: 2011 Annual Report of the Comptroller and Auditor General and Appropriation Accounts
Vote 10 - Office of Public Works
(23 May 2013)

Gerald Nash: How was it that the State could manage to finance a similar office for another Minister of State at the then Department of Health and Children for €70,000? At the same time, for an amount which would pay for three semi-detached houses in Drogheda, a very lavish office that would be more suited to Wall Street was put in place on Kildare Street. The building in which what has now...

Public Accounts Committee: 2011 Annual Report of the Comptroller and Auditor General and Appropriation Accounts
Vote 10 - Office of Public Works
(23 May 2013)

Gerald Nash: What did that particular project involve?
