Order of Business (29 Sep 2010)

Eamon Gilmore: The Labour Party does not agree to the arrangement for the taking of No. 16. This is the proposal the Government is bringing to the House to extend the blanket guarantee that was introduced two years ago. Whatever justification there might have been two years ago — that the Government was up all night and had to bring the matter before the House in a rush and put the gun to our heads to...

Order of Business (29 Sep 2010)

Eamon Gilmore: I noted the Taoiseach's reply to Deputy Kenny's question on the budget date. Deputy Kenny asked if the Taoiseach would confirm that the budget date is still 7 December. The Taoiseach, in his reply, said something to the effect that the budget date that has been mentioned is 7 December. Will the Taoiseach confirm that the date of the budget is 7 December, or does the Government have any...

Order of Business (29 Sep 2010)

In light of this undertaking, what time does the Taoiseach expect the information to be announced?

Eamon Gilmore: The Taoiseach must be expecting it early in the day if he is in a position to tell us we can have a debate on it in the House tomorrow.

Eamon Gilmore: The Taoiseach knows more about this report than he pretended earlier on.

Issue of Writs: Dublin South, Waterford and Donegal South-West By-elections (29 Sep 2010)

Eamon Gilmore: The Labour Party supports the three motions proposed by Fine Gael to move the writs for the vacancies in the constituencies of Dublin South, Donegal South West and Waterford. It is now more than seven months since George Lee resigned as a Member of this House. Following the death of Séamus Brennan in July 2008, the seat was left unfilled for 11 months. As a result the people of Dublin...

Order of Business (30 Sep 2010)

Eamon Gilmore: No, there will not be ample time - that is the whole problem. The proposal from the Government is that the statements on the statement made officially by the Minister for Finance this morning on the full cost of the banking bailout should conclude at 3.30 p.m. today. This means that, in effect, the Government is proposing that the Dáil be given between two hours and 2.5 hours to discuss...

Order of Business (30 Sep 2010)

Eamon Gilmore: I acknowledge and thank the Taoiseach for agreeing to the suggestion by Deputy Kenny and me that the debate be extended to allow everybody in the House an opportunity to contribute. The Taoiseach said that the arrangements can be agreed by the Whips. I hope he will also agree that in making those arrangements, the Whips will be enabled to make suitable arrangements for questions and answers...

Leaders' Questions (5 Oct 2010)

Eamon Gilmore: Most people in the country are in a state of shock at what we heard on Thursday about the eventual cost of bailing out the banks - coming in at €50 billion - and all of the implications of that for public finances, taxation, State borrowing and the cost of borrowing. During the month of September, RTE ran two documentaries, entitled, "Freefall", which dealt in particular with the bank...

Leaders' Questions (5 Oct 2010)

Eamon Gilmore: It is very strange that a series of events was triggered by Anglo Irish Bank people going to Bank of Ireland and telling them Anglo was facing insolvency and that this caused both Bank of Ireland and Allied Irish Banks to come rushing down to Government Buildings to talk about the banking crisis without ever mentioning that Anglo Irish Bank faced insolvency. Did the two banks not tell the...

Order of Business (5 Oct 2010)

Eamon Gilmore: I join the Taoiseach and Deputy Kenny in expressing serious concern about what happened in Derry last night and I hope the Garda and PSNI are successful in finding out who was responsible, dealing with them and bringing them to justice. A significant amount of this type of activity has been building up for some time and it needs to be dealt with before it gets serious. I refer to the local...

Order of Business (5 Oct 2010)

Eamon Gilmore: Are the rate payers of Dublin city and county to pay for this then? How will there not be additional costs? This is a new office. The McCarthy report recommended the abolition of regional authorities while it is proposed to legislate for regional authority for Dublin in this Bill. I do not understand how there cannot be costs attached to it. How will it be financed?
