Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Climate Action Plan 2023: Discussion (16 Feb 2023)

Bríd Smith: I ask the Minister's pardon because my voice is a bit weak. I will use it, however, to say to the Minister that I do not believe the plan fulfils the legal requirement as he said because so many important sources are disputing this point with him. Examples include the Environmental Protection Agency, EPA, Professor John Sweeney, Professor Barry McMullin and An Taisce. They have all said...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Climate Action Plan 2023: Discussion (16 Feb 2023)

Bríd Smith: What the Minister is saying then is that this is all great on paper, that there is a lot of good research and ambition on paper, but the reality flies in the face of it. If we cannot intervene, for example, to cut agricultural emissions or to stop the proliferation of data centres because we live in a democracy, then this objective is going to be impossible to achieve.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Climate Action Plan 2023: Discussion (16 Feb 2023)

Bríd Smith: My point was not to deny that we needed it. Not at all. I said we needed it because of the proliferation of data centres and the amount of energy they guzzle from the national grid. It is totally out of kilter with any other state. They do not allow it to go to 15% or 16% of the national grid.

Bríd Smith: Amendment No. 5 is in our name. To elaborate on what has already been said, we think it is insufficient to have ""hatred" means hatred" end of story. We want to see an amendment to the definition, that " "hatred" [is] a state of mind characterised as intense and irrational emotions of opprobrium, enmity, and detestation rooted in bias, prejudice or hostility". Those last few words are very...

Eviction Ban Bill 2022: Second Stage [Private Members] (22 Feb 2023)

Bríd Smith: Yesterday, the Minister told us he had not yet decided what to do regarding extending the partial eviction ban. He said it was complicated, that the Attorney General will have to be consulted, that legal opinions will have to be sought and that a balance must be struck between the rights of landlords and of tenants. The real solution, he again told us, is supply. I will help him. My...
