- Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: Voting Rights of Citizens within EU: European Commission (11 Mar 2014)
Terry Leyden: I thank my colleagues. I welcome Ms Nolan and Eimear Ní Bhroin and thank them for their work for the Commission. I have been regularly attending functions and events and they play an active role in the work of the Commission which is appreciated by Members of the Oireachtas. I commend their important schools programme. In principle, my party is much in favour of this. The first...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: Voting Rights of Citizens within EU: European Commission (11 Mar 2014)
Terry Leyden: That is fair enough. In principle, it is a good idea. I agree that voting rights should be extended for presidential elections, but Irish citizens here at home should be assured that they have a voting right, for example, after 54 years. It is, to say the least, sick to be removed. If we could get our act together here for a start, we might be in a better position to get our act together...

- Seanad: Order of Business (12 Mar 2014)
Terry Leyden: I hope the Seanad will join with me in wishing the Irish diaspora a very happy St. Patrick's Day. I am delighted that Ministers are travelling abroad, as I did in the past, to visit countries and spread the good word about Ireland. I hope they enjoy themselves as well. It is tough work.
- Seanad: Order of Business (12 Mar 2014)
Terry Leyden: There is no doubt it is a tough job. St. Patrick's Day is very important and it is building up to being an extremely important day from a sales and marketing point of view for this country, which is why it is important that we send our wishes from the Seanad. I hope the Leader will add to this when he speaks. The new revitalised Seanad Éireann, having survived its abolition by the...
- Seanad: Order of Business (12 Mar 2014)
Terry Leyden: I hope an appointment will be made by next Monday. Quite frankly, it is very insulting. We need an ambassador in the United States of America. There is no point in withdrawing our ambassador but it is a shame. I compliment the work of Senators Mark Daly, Paschal Mooney and others who have been working with the 40 million diaspora in the United States of America.
- Seanad: Order of Business (12 Mar 2014)
Terry Leyden: Next Monday is a very important day. It is a day for celebration, enjoyment and fun. I hope you, a Chathaoirligh, will have a nice time in Castlebar.
- Seanad: Order of Business (12 Mar 2014)
Terry Leyden: Excellent. I wish you success and I hope you pull it off.
- Seanad: Order of Business (12 Mar 2014)
Terry Leyden: I have a mini vested interest in this particular regard. There is so much red tape at the moment. Ireland is renowned for dancing - dancing at the crossroads, the comely maidens and athletic young men. Senator Norris probably gave the details of Éamon De Valera's famous speech. The reality is that one cannot dance at the crossroads unless one has a licence. One has to apply for a...
- Seanad: Order of Business (12 Mar 2014)
Terry Leyden: The law does not apply to public dancing in the recreation room managed or conducted under the authority of the Minister for Defence or the Commissioner of the Garda Síochána. The Commissioner can have a dance up in the Phoenix Park and he does not-----

Terry Leyden: -----require a licence but if we have a little dance in a public house in the west of Ireland or at a crossroads we have to have a licence.
- Seanad: Order of Business (12 Mar 2014)
Terry Leyden: No. The Minister of State, Deputy Michael Ring, is the most practical Minister in the Government. He has been responsible for The Gathering.
- Seanad: Order of Business (12 Mar 2014)
Terry Leyden: I hope the Minister of State, Deputy Ring, will bring about a situation where he will get rid of this rubbish. This is Ireland. In Spain or elsewhere one can dance where one wants to dance in any pub or anywhere else without having any stupid licence. It is ridiculous that one has to go-----
