Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Transparency of RTÉ Expenditure of Public Funds and Governance Issues: Discussion (Resumed) (11 Jul 2023)

Imelda Munster: It just seems to be – I am not denying that RTÉ is in the thick of it – that everything today is RTÉ's fault. This is a simple enough question that Mr. Kelly, as his client's agent, could have publicly rectified. It is not the biggest issue, but he could have publicly rectified it and he chose not to.

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Transparency of RTÉ Expenditure of Public Funds and Governance Issues: Discussion (Resumed) (11 Jul 2023)

Imelda Munster: Mr. Kelly did not correct them.

Investment in Football: Motion [Private Members] (12 Jul 2023)

Imelda Munster: I want to speak about grassroots soccer, the League of Ireland and the publication at the beginning of June of the FAI's facility development strategy, which shows the association recognises the need for long-term investment and the development of Irish football. It comes at a time when we see most stadiums in the men's Premier Division selling out in advance of matches week in, week out....

Ceisteanna ar Sonraíodh Uain Dóibh - Priority Questions: Tourist Accommodation (13 Jul 2023)

Imelda Munster: 51. To ask the Minister for Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht if she has met with, or whether she intends to meet, a representative body (details supplied) and Fáilte Ireland to raise concerns around hotels price gouging and cancelling bookings without reason, and re-advertising the same rooms at much higher rates when major events, such as a specific concert, are announced; and if she...

Public Accounts Committee: Appropriation and Expenditure of Public Moneys by RTÉ (Resumed): RTÉ (13 Jul 2023)

Imelda Munster: I will start with Mr. Lynch. He previously said he knew nothing about the underwriting of the Renault deal with RTÉ. However, as others have said, Noel Kelly showed us the emails from Breda O'Keeffe. It is clear from what we have seen that he actually knew, but he told the committee that he did not. I will quote from his previous appearance at the committee. He said "I also asked...

Public Accounts Committee: Appropriation and Expenditure of Public Moneys by RTÉ (Resumed): RTÉ (13 Jul 2023)

Imelda Munster: No. That is too much of a comfort blanket for Mr. Lynch to cling to. He knew exactly about the deal that was done to underwrite the Renault deal and the payments involved. The tripartite agreement was not just about the Renault deal in year one; it was about the three top-up payments. Mr. Lynch distinctly told our committee that he "asked each individual executive board member to give me...

Public Accounts Committee: Appropriation and Expenditure of Public Moneys by RTÉ (Resumed): RTÉ (13 Jul 2023)

Imelda Munster: In that email-----

Public Accounts Committee: Appropriation and Expenditure of Public Moneys by RTÉ (Resumed): RTÉ (13 Jul 2023)

Imelda Munster: No. I do not actually give Mr. Lynch's answers any credence, to be honest.

Public Accounts Committee: Appropriation and Expenditure of Public Moneys by RTÉ (Resumed): RTÉ (13 Jul 2023)

Imelda Munster: On 20 February, in the correspondence it states: We made good progress on what the commercial agreement would be and we agree to one in Dublin ... and ... with a side letter to underwrite this fee for the duration of the contract. That contract was covering the three payments of €75,000.

Public Accounts Committee: Appropriation and Expenditure of Public Moneys by RTÉ (Resumed): RTÉ (13 Jul 2023)

Imelda Munster: That is what the response was to.

Public Accounts Committee: Appropriation and Expenditure of Public Moneys by RTÉ (Resumed): RTÉ (13 Jul 2023)

Imelda Munster: Whether it was signed or not, you went ahead and paid those three payments.

Public Accounts Committee: Appropriation and Expenditure of Public Moneys by RTÉ (Resumed): RTÉ (13 Jul 2023)

Imelda Munster: So whether it was signed or not is totally irrelevant. You agreed. As in the copy of this correspondence, it was agreed to underwrite the contract in its entirety - all three payments.

Public Accounts Committee: Appropriation and Expenditure of Public Moneys by RTÉ (Resumed): RTÉ (13 Jul 2023)

Imelda Munster: Mr. Lynch told us that "I also asked each individual executive board member to give me a guarantee that they knew nothing about the underwriting"-----

Public Accounts Committee: Appropriation and Expenditure of Public Moneys by RTÉ (Resumed): RTÉ (13 Jul 2023)

Imelda Munster: -----and they did. However, they did know and Mr. Lynch had to know-----

Imelda Munster: With all due respect to Mr. Bakhurst-----

Imelda Munster: -----just two minutes ago he said he had confidence.

Public Accounts Committee: Appropriation and Expenditure of Public Moneys by RTÉ (Resumed): RTÉ (13 Jul 2023)

Imelda Munster: Mr. Lynch misled the committee.

Public Accounts Committee: Appropriation and Expenditure of Public Moneys by RTÉ (Resumed): RTÉ (13 Jul 2023)

Imelda Munster: No wonder there is frustration here.

Public Accounts Committee: Appropriation and Expenditure of Public Moneys by RTÉ (Resumed): RTÉ (13 Jul 2023)

Imelda Munster: Listen to more waffle. That is all it is.

Public Accounts Committee: Appropriation and Expenditure of Public Moneys by RTÉ (Resumed): RTÉ (13 Jul 2023)

Imelda Munster: That is not the point. Mr. Lynch knew about the three payments. He knew that the agreement was underwritten by RTÉ. He told us that he spoke to his senior executives and asked them to give a guarantee that they did not know about it.
