Róisín Shortall: The Health Professionals (Reduction of Payments to Community Pharmacy Contractors) Regulations 2011 which were made under section 9 of the Financial Emergency Measures in the Public Interest Act 2009 provide for a reduction in the wholesale mark-up on fridge items from 17.66% to 12%. The anticipated full year saving from this measure is â¬2,200,000.

Róisín Shortall: Eligibility for medical cards is based on means. Under the Health Act 2008, the income thresholds for entitlement to a medical card for persons aged 70 and over is â¬700(gross) per week (â¬36,500 per year) for a single person and â¬1,400 (gross) per week (â¬73,000 per year) for a couple. I have no plans to change the eligibility criteria at this time.

Róisín Shortall: 36.89% of the national population were covered by medical cards as at 1st August 2011. The other information sought by the Deputy is not provided by the HSE to my Department as a matter of routine. Accordingly, my Department has requested the Parliamentary Affairs Division of the Executive to arrange to address these matters and to have a reply issued directly to the Deputy.
