Seanad: Electoral (Amendment)(Political Funding) Bill 2011: Second Stage (2 Feb 2012)

Mark Daly: I note the point. I presume that if mediocre women are nominated that mediocre women would get elected to the Houses in the same way that she hinted that mediocre men are nominated and elected all the time. I do not think that remark was addressed to the Acting Chairman, or any of the males in this Chamber. However, I ask the Minister to look specifically at the Seanad where political...

Seanad: EU Fiscal Compact Treaty: Statements, Questions and Answers (7 Feb 2012)

Mark Daly: I am interested in the answer to Senator Crown's question. It was in the news, and the Minister of State, Deputy Creighton said it herself, that we had no position paper going into negotiations. There is no support for the common consolidated tax base on our corporation tax. We lost the vote on it as recently as last October. Just nine European countries supported us. Mrs. Merkel and Mr....

Mark Daly: I want to know why we did not have a position paper on corporation tax. On the question of debt write-down-----

Mark Daly: It has nothing to do with it.

Seanad: EU Fiscal Compact Treaty: Statements, Questions and Answers (7 Feb 2012)

Mark Daly: The Government is not entirely tuned in. By the end of the year, France and Germany will have taken away whatever competitive advantage we have.

Seanad: EU Fiscal Compact Treaty: Statements, Questions and Answers (7 Feb 2012)

Mark Daly: I am wondering why the Government is-----

Seanad: Order of Business (8 Feb 2012)

Mark Daly: I wish to ask the Leader again for a debate on the undocumented Irish in America. I know we spoke about this matter on the Order of Business on Thursday, but the issue has moved on since then. The key to granting 10,500 E3 visas for Irish citizens now lies with Senator Scott Brown of Massachusetts. Both the Taoiseach and the Tánaiste will be in America this week. The Tánaiste and...

Seanad: Order of Business (8 Feb 2012)

Mark Daly: She was not asked.

Seanad: Order of Business (8 Feb 2012)

Mark Daly: I look forward to the update.

Seanad: Investment in Education: Motion (8 Feb 2012)

Mark Daly: I support my colleague. The Government is disproportionately attacking Gaeltacht schools, and Protestant and minority schools. When the Minister says that small rural schools of four teachers and fewer should consider amalgamation, it tells us where he is at. Schools in my area in Lauragh, Realt na Mara, Tahilla and Banawn will all be affected as will schools throughout rural areas. We...

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Feb 2012)

Mark Daly: Let us study the Official Report to find out who said it was a bad thing.

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Feb 2012)

Mark Daly: I second the amendment to the Order of Business proposed by Senator Walsh. It is curious that we extended an official invitation to the head of the Church of England and yet we do not seem to extend an invitation to the Pontiff. We invited Queen Elizabeth, who is the head of the Church of England, and extended her all the courtesy.

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Feb 2012)

Mark Daly: To clarify-----

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Feb 2012)

Mark Daly: For clarification, the head of the Church of England is the Queen.

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Feb 2012)

Mark Daly: It is the Queen.

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Feb 2012)

Mark Daly: That is an item for another day. My point to Senator Colm Burke is that the Government has stated it will show every courtesy but will not extend an invitation.

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Feb 2012)

Mark Daly: That is what the Taoiseach said. I thank the Leader for his answer on yesterday's Order of Business. I agree with his policy that only those in the Chamber should get a reply. The clarification was that the Taoiseach and Tánaiste will be seeking waivers for the undocumented Irish from the US Secretary of State, Mrs. Clinton, and President Obama when they travel to Washington. I thank him...
