- Seanad: The Future of Europe and the Value of European Union Membership to Ireland: Statements (5 Mar 2019)
Fintan Warfield: It is paramount that the people of Europe should be involved in the discussion about the future of Europe. This needs to be an honest discussion about the failures and successes of the European Union. Constructive criticism is needed to make the EU work better. This is not, and should not be seen, as a question of being in or out of the EU. Ireland's place is clearly within the EU. That...
- Seanad: Traveller Accommodation: Statements (6 Mar 2019)
Fintan Warfield: I listened to Kathleen Lawrence when she spoke at the launch of the children's rights report card in the Mansion House a couple of weeks ago. The Government received a D grade for progress on Traveller and Roma children. She spoke perfectly about childhood experience in the world we live in and the discrimination she and her family and friends face. I want to speak about the recent...
- Seanad: European Parliament Elections (Amendment) Bill 2019: Second Stage (6 Mar 2019)
Fintan Warfield: I welcome the opportunity to discuss the Bill. While Sinn Féin may disagree with what is being suggested, it is understandable what is being proposed by Government given the unprecedented circumstances. The proposal of withholding two MEPs from taking up their role until such time as we have certainty as regards the completion of the first stage of Brexit is something that I am...
- Seanad: European Parliament Elections (Amendment) Bill 2019: Second Stage (6 Mar 2019)
Fintan Warfield: I want to address Fianna Fáil's claims that the solution of providing two additional seats in the North is somehow legally unworkable. This claim is made despite Fianna Fáil being furnished with legal opinion to the contrary. It is only right that we give due consideration to the rights of citizens in the North. Under the Good Friday Agreement, the birthright to Irish and British...
- Seanad: European Parliament Elections (Amendment) Bill 2019: Order for Committee Stage (6 Mar 2019)
Fintan Warfield: I wish to call a vote.
- Seanad: European Parliament Elections (Amendment) Bill 2019: Order for Committee Stage (6 Mar 2019)
Fintan Warfield: I know there will be votes on Committee Stage.
- Seanad: European Parliament Elections (Amendment) Bill 2019: Order for Committee Stage (6 Mar 2019)
Fintan Warfield: No.
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (7 Mar 2019)
Fintan Warfield: I find it remarkable that the lack of Sinn Féin presence in Westminster would be used to excuse the comments made by the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland yesterday. Her comments were not due to her listening only to one voice. I contend that she is listening not only to the DUP but to the layers of establishment that exist in London. Her comments go right to the heart of that...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: Governance and Child Safeguarding Issues in Scouting Ireland: Tusla and Scouting Ireland (13 Mar 2019)
Fintan Warfield: Many areas have already been covered. The public funding of Scouting Ireland brings the matter into the public sphere and gives politicians a place in the process. Is it fair to suggest that the letter should not have been read on the floor of the Dáil? The Minister, Deputy Zappone, says that she felt a responsibility to communicate it directly to parents. Is it correct to take from...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: Governance and Child Safeguarding Issues in Scouting Ireland: Tusla and Scouting Ireland (13 Mar 2019)
Fintan Warfield: I have two questions about the letter. I refer to p.3, part C. Who was present for those interviews? Were those interviews all held in a way that was appropriate and sensitive for juveniles? Were gardaí present? If not, was there a social worker present?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: Governance and Child Safeguarding Issues in Scouting Ireland: Tusla and Scouting Ireland (13 Mar 2019)
Fintan Warfield: Is that with a social worker?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: Governance and Child Safeguarding Issues in Scouting Ireland: Tusla and Scouting Ireland (13 Mar 2019)
Fintan Warfield: Would a garda ever be present alone with a juvenile?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: Governance and Child Safeguarding Issues in Scouting Ireland: Tusla and Scouting Ireland (13 Mar 2019)
Fintan Warfield: Tusla contends that the highest level of safeguarding positions within Scouting Ireland would be internally appointed and operated. Would it be wise for those safeguarding positions to be run externally with no connection to the organisation?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: Governance and Child Safeguarding Issues in Scouting Ireland: Tusla and Scouting Ireland (13 Mar 2019)
Fintan Warfield: I thank the witnesses for appearing before the committee. At a previous meeting we spoke about the traffic light system that has been in place since 2012. I think a handful of cases were flagged as red around that time. We can then fast-forward to an investigation by Mr. Ian Elliott when about 300 cases were flagged as red. How did that dramatic change come about?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: Governance and Child Safeguarding Issues in Scouting Ireland: Tusla and Scouting Ireland (13 Mar 2019)
Fintan Warfield: I asked Tusla this question and understandably its representative said that it was not in a position to dictate Scouting Ireland's appointments. It is not to suggest that Scouting Ireland is incompetent. I do not have an opinion either way on the answer to this question. Was it considered that the safeguarding roles that would be appointed would be external?
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (26 Mar 2019)
Fintan Warfield: Mr. Viktor Orbán has spent the past nine years breaking down the rule of law and democracy in Hungary and whipping up fear. We know all too well his policies on gender, LGBT rights, refugee status, judicial independence and press freedom. The European People's Party last week decided to suspend the Fidesz party, which essentially means stripping the 12 MEPs concerned of voting and...
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (26 Mar 2019)
Fintan Warfield: Did the Leader ask Fine Gael Members of the European Parliament-----
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (26 Mar 2019)
Fintan Warfield: Let us stay in Europe today.
- Seanad: Wildlife (Amendment) Bill 2016: Second Stage (Resumed) (26 Mar 2019)
Fintan Warfield: Sinn Féin will be supporting this legislation. While most of those involved in the issue of raised bogs and turf cutting would be broadly supportive of what the Habitats Directive is trying to achieve in terms of environmental protection, the implementation by previous Governments resulted in the disputes that we saw in recent years. The Habitats directive specified that considerations...
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (27 Mar 2019)
Fintan Warfield: The film "Boy Erased" is yet another unmasking of the cruelty of so-called conversion therapy. It is a vile practice designed to suppress, change or eliminate a person's sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression. The practice has been condemned and discredited by the UN Committee Against Torture, European Parliament and Irish Council for Psychotherapy. On 6 March, the Irish...
