- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht: Electricity Generation and Export: Discussion (18 Feb 2014)
Denis Landy: That is fine. It is important that we know that.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht: Electricity Generation and Export: Discussion (18 Feb 2014)
Denis Landy: I can clarify that if Mr. D'Arcy would like me to do so.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht: Electricity Generation and Export: Discussion (18 Feb 2014)
Denis Landy: I was asked by Mr. D'Arcy to clarify something.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht: Electricity Generation and Export: Discussion (18 Feb 2014)
Denis Landy: Mr. D'Arcy is representing Bord na Móna, of which the Government is the largest shareholder. The Government and Bord na Móna are responsible to the taxpayer.
- Seanad: Order of Business (19 Feb 2014)
Denis Landy: Yesterday, the environment committee had a charm offensive launched at it by two representatives from several wind energy organisations, Bord na Móna and Element Power Ireland. There was much marketing speak with claims that local communities would receive €250 million in 25 years and benefit from educational bursaries while homes would become more energy efficient and get...
- Seanad: Greyhound Racing Industry: Statements (19 Feb 2014)
Denis Landy: I welcome my constituency colleague, the Minister of State, Deputy Tom Hayes. He and I come from Tipperary, which is classed as the home of greyhounds. In the past I was unfortunate enough to co-own and to be a member of syndicates which owned some seriously bad dogs. I had the luxury of collecting winnings on perhaps only four occasions. Dog owning and breeding are traditions which date...
- Seanad: Greyhound Racing Industry: Statements (19 Feb 2014)
Denis Landy: We will take the hurling and Senator Heffernan 's area can be the home of the dogs.
- Seanad: ESB (Electronic Communications Networks) Bill 2013: Second Stage (20 Feb 2014)
Denis Landy: I welcome the Minister, Deputy Rabbitte, to the House. I join other speakers in complimenting the ESB workers on the effort they have put in. We sat here on Private Members' legislation one Wednesday night to prevent utility workers from having the right to withdraw their labour. On that occasion, I spoke of the efforts that the ESB workers, among other workers, put in during the 2010 snow...
- Seanad: Order of Business (4 Mar 2014)
Denis Landy: As we mark the third anniversary of the election of this Government, I want to welcome the efforts it has made to reduce unemployment. The employment position has improved over the past 18 months. Unemployment figures have decreased. Given that the previous Administration, by contrast, oversaw 250,000 job losses, it is clear that this Government is doing a good job. Some 5,000 jobs are...
- Seanad: Order of Business (5 Mar 2014)
Denis Landy: I wish to raise the issue of the new service for the provision of national driving licences. Last year the Government decided to take the provision of the service from the local authorities and set up a new organisation. A contract was given out, centres were set up across the country and people had to attend these centres during working hours to get their new driver licences. This has...
- Seanad: County Enterprise Boards (Dissolution) Bill 2013: [Seanad Bill amended by the Dáil] Report and Final Stages (Resumed) (6 Mar 2014)
Denis Landy: I welcome the Minister of State, Deputy Sean Sherlock, to the House for the final stages of the legislation. It is good to see that the issue was brought back by way of amendments which were highlighted. It is good that legislation is scrutinised in such a way as to ensure there are no gaps. When Senator Ned O'Sullivan said his party would oppose the legislation I thought he was going to...
- Seanad: County Enterprise Boards (Dissolution) Bill 2013: [Seanad Bill amended by the Dáil] Report and Final Stages (Resumed) (6 Mar 2014)
Denis Landy: Notwithstanding that, I understand Senator Ned O'Sullivan might have some concerns about the Bill, but having read the legislation and the various debates on it I am satisfied that the movement from county enterprise boards, which were in place for more than 20 years, as stated by Senator Michael Mullins, to local enterprise offices is a good one. Furthermore, I am convinced by the fact that...
- Seanad: Order of Business (11 Mar 2014)
Denis Landy: To take up Senator Mary Ann O'Brien's comment on wind energy, the only announcement made last year was on a memorandum of understanding between this country and Britain on exports of wind energy. Last Friday the United Kingdom withdrew from discussions on progressing the memorandum to an intergovernmental agreement. That has caused confusion in local communities because the previous...
- Seanad: Order of Business (26 Mar 2014)
Denis Landy: I raise the issue of increased charges for elderly and vulnerable people in nursing homes. It has come to my attention in recent weeks that many elderly people have been requested to pay extra money for services in nursing homes. We are all aware there is a fair deal system in place where people on basic social welfare pay 80% of their social welfare payment per week. That leaves elderly...
- Seanad: Participation in Sport: Motion (2 Apr 2014)
Denis Landy: I welcome the positive report we received from the Minister on the Government's activities in the area of sports. In 2013, sports contributed €2.4 billion to the Irish economy, and 40,000 jobs are supported through Irish sports. The economic analysis by Senator Ó Murchú may not stand up to scrutiny but it is a fact that €818 million was spent on sporting initiatives...
- Seanad: Participation in Sport: Motion (2 Apr 2014)
Denis Landy: They even bet on politics, although I do not expect the money to go back into politics. Perhaps the Minister will comment on whether revenues from the betting tax could be invested in other sports. Credit should be given to the 500,000 adults who volunteered in Irish sports in 2013. As Senator Eamonn Coghlan noted, people volunteer to support sporting activities every day of the week....
- Seanad: Participation in Sport: Motion (2 Apr 2014)
Denis Landy: I am certainly broke now. I acknowledge what Senator Eamonn Coghlan has done for sport in this country. Reference has been made to the GAA. Last year we had a fantastic occasion in my home town to honour Maurice Davin, the first president of the GAA, who was born there. He was the only president to serve two terms. Senator Eamonn Coghlan, a great sports ambassador, came for a one mile fun run.
- Seanad: Participation in Sport: Motion (2 Apr 2014)
Denis Landy: We let the Senator win.
- Seanad: Participation in Sport: Motion (2 Apr 2014)
Denis Landy: As the Senator said that night, Maurice Davin was the first president of the Gaelic Athletic Association and somewhere along the way in the mists of history it became a mainstream hurling and football association which I support strongly and athletics were not as prominent. It is great that the Senator, one of our foremost athletes, recognised Maurice Davin. I greatly appreciate it. We all...
- Seanad: Participation in Sport: Motion (2 Apr 2014)
Denis Landy: He was lucky.
