Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: Business of Joint Committee (29 Apr 2015)

Pat Breen: Yes. We are not going to have a discussion on this. Deputy Seán Crowe has some constructive ideas on the way we should move forward. Members should go along with that in a constructive way to see what the committee can do to work towards reconciliation and normalisation of relations between Armenia and Turkey. Maybe we can do something small on this as a committee. I thank Deputy...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: Business of Joint Committee (29 Apr 2015)

Pat Breen: I had a briefing yesterday from the Department on that. There are about ten Irish people not accounted for. Some of these people may have moved on to other countries, so the Department is not sure. It is keeping a close eye on it. An emergency crisis centre has been set up in the Department to deal with that.

Pat Breen: We will take the views expressed on board and write to the Nepalese ambassador in London highlighting the issues raised by all the members, including Deputy Maureen O'Sullivan's point about children and people with disabilities. We will offer our deepest sympathy and outline to the ambassador what the Government has done in respect of this terrible tragedy. We will also keep ourselves...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: Trade between Ireland and ASEAN Countries: Irish Exporters Association (29 Apr 2015)

Pat Breen: I apologise to the witnesses for the slightly late start but we have just some lengthy discussions on a number of issues. We are delighted welcome Mr. Hugh Kelly, president of the Irish Exporters Association, and Mr. John Nevin, chairman of the Asia trade forum of the Irish Exporters Association, to discuss trade links with the ASEAN countries. The purpose of this meeting is to provide a...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: Trade between Ireland and ASEAN Countries: Irish Exporters Association (29 Apr 2015)

Pat Breen: Thank you. Before I hand over to members, I would like to raise two issues. Both witnesses mentioned the scarcity of personnel on the ground, particularly from our development agencies and, possibly, from our embassies. Reference was made to a meeting the delegation had earlier with the Japanese ambassador. Japan and Korea, in terms of the Japan Export Trade and Research Association,...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: Trade between Ireland and ASEAN Countries: Irish Exporters Association (29 Apr 2015)

Pat Breen: The witnesses may now respond to the questions raised by members. Given that we have opened two new embassies in Thailand and Indonesia, with a consulate general in Hong Kong, what is the importance of having a resident embassy? It is something that cannot be emphasised enough. There were ten ASEAN countries mentioned so where is the real growth potential for Ireland to do business? We...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: Trade between Ireland and ASEAN Countries: Irish Exporters Association (29 Apr 2015)
