Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: New Retrofitting Plan and the Built Environment: Discussion (Resumed) (10 May 2022)

Pauline O'Reilly: Have a bee in our bonnets about.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: New Retrofitting Plan and the Built Environment: Discussion (Resumed) (10 May 2022)

Pauline O'Reilly: There needs to be some transparency in order that we are all on the same page and know what local authorities are expected to adhere to. It is difficult for them to know, but it is also difficult to look across the country and say that we are meeting our targets when this work is being done differently by the various local authorities.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Gender Equality: Recommendations of the Citizens’ Assembly on Gender Equality: Discussion (Resumed) (12 May 2022)

Pauline O'Reilly: I thank Saoirse and Emer. It is good to see both of them again in a different context. I thank them for their work in all the things they do in representing the ISSU as well as their climate justice work. I also thank David. A couple of things occurred to me. One is that we recently had a report from the NCCA around leaving certificate reform, but much of that is ongoing work. I would...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Gender Equality: Recommendations of the Citizens’ Assembly on Gender Equality: Discussion (Resumed) (12 May 2022)

Pauline O'Reilly: Can I come back in on that point?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Gender Equality: Recommendations of the Citizens’ Assembly on Gender Equality: Discussion (Resumed) (12 May 2022)

Pauline O'Reilly: Senator Warfield touched a little bit on the point of what education is going on outside school. I have a frustration. I am a former chair of the Home Education Network and I home educated my kids for much of their lives. I have a different perspective on education and I am a proponent of unschooling. We tend to segregate. People are experts in education within a system that exists but...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Gender Equality: Recommendations of the Citizens’ Assembly on Gender Equality: Discussion (Resumed) (12 May 2022)

Pauline O'Reilly: I thank Mr. Byrne. I could probably talk about this all day but I will not.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Gender Equality: Recommendations of the Citizens’ Assembly on Gender Equality: Discussion (Resumed) (12 May 2022)

Pauline O'Reilly: They have just gone into school in the past year and a half but, as you can see, I am passionate about it. There were excellent points raised there. I like the phrase "ecology of learning." The other point, which was brought up at the Joint Committee on Education, Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, was the responsibility of the media when it comes to...

Seanad: Regulation of Display of Electoral and Polling Posters and Other Advertisements Bill 2022: Second Stage (17 May 2022)

Pauline O'Reilly: I move: "That the Bill be now read a Second Time." I thank the Minister of State for coming to the House for this very important Bill. It is something that has come up for us, as the Green Party, an awful lot. However, I know for a fact that it comes up for every party. I refer to election posters and the scourge that people feel they are. When it comes time for an election, we all...

Seanad: Regulation of Display of Electoral and Polling Posters and Other Advertisements Bill 2022: Second Stage (17 May 2022)

Pauline O'Reilly: I thank the Minister of State for his words and my thanks to everybody who has engaged in this debate. I welcome that the Minister of State will encourage the commission to look at this Bill as part of its work because significant work has been put into it. I have heard many of the arguments that have been made here. My one comment is that when it comes to the place of posters in the...

Seanad: Carbon Policy: Motion (19 May 2022)

Pauline O'Reilly: I thank Senators Keogan, Mullen and McDowell for bringing this motion forward. To be honest, having looked through the text of motion, it seems to be a collection of things and I am unsure why they have all been put together. I refer to aspects such as turf, data centres, LNG and nuclear power. I will discuss the issue of nuclear power specifically, but this seems to be a collection of...

Seanad: Online Safety and Media Regulation Bill 2022: Committee Stage (Resumed) (25 May 2022)

Pauline O'Reilly: I thank the Minister and her staff for their engagement with me on the issue of formula and breastfeeding. I hope there is recognition that when the Bill includes sugar and salt it must be broadened to other public health matters. I will not go over old ground because I spoke extensively on the impact of advertising on breastfeeding rates in this country and that it is no surprise that we...

Seanad: Online Safety and Media Regulation Bill 2022: Committee Stage (Resumed) (25 May 2022)

Pauline O'Reilly: I will be brief. I thank the Minister for taking on board the comments on formula milk and referring back to us. I reiterate my thanks to her departmental officials for speaking to me and engaging on this. It is important that something will come back to us on Report Stage.

Seanad: Online Safety and Media Regulation Bill 2022: Committee Stage (Resumed) (31 May 2022)

Pauline O'Reilly: Amendments Nos. 200 and 201 are related. Amendment No. 201 is a physical alternative to amendment No. 200. The amendments will be discussed together by agreement. Is that agreed? Agreed.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Gender Equality: Recommendations of the Citizens’ Assembly on Gender Equality: Discussion (Resumed) (19 May 2022)

Pauline O'Reilly: I welcome the Minister and the officials who have joined us. I am aware that this is an important issue for the Minister. She has outlined her commitment around STEM, and access for girls in particular, and I could not disagree with anything she said about any of the work that she has done in this regard. In the past we have seen a very low take-up of apprenticeships by girls. The Minister...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Gender Equality: Recommendations of the Citizens’ Assembly on Gender Equality: Discussion (Resumed) (19 May 2022)

Pauline O'Reilly: I could hear the bells ringing in the background for the Leader of the Seanad to get in. It was great that she got an opportunity to speak. I was excited when I saw that the witnesses were coming in because it is very close to my heart. To be fair to the Minister, Deputy Foley, she was talking about schools putting themselves forward for a pilot. I think she believes there is a commitment...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Empowering Local Government and Local Communities to Climate Action: Discussion (24 May 2022)

Pauline O'Reilly: I thank the witnesses for their comments. I agree with Deputies Christopher O'Sullivan and Bruton about the electric vehicle charging points. It is frustrating when so much funding is available and people fail to apply for it. We have a problem in Connemara too, so it is not just Westport. It goes to the heart of the point I am going to make, which is we have to bring communities with us....

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Empowering Local Government and Local Communities to Climate Action: Discussion (24 May 2022)

Pauline O'Reilly: I do not know that it is. The Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage has to implement some of these things, but it comes down to experts in the area of sustainability and climate saying what is needed from local authorities.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Empowering Local Government and Local Communities to Climate Action: Discussion (24 May 2022)

Pauline O'Reilly: Maybe it is a question to leave there but it is important to have it on the record. Having worked as a councillor, although for a brief time, we brought in a climate adaptation strategy for the city and things moved on towards mitigation plans. There were no mitigation targets, which is my point.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Empowering Local Government and Local Communities to Climate Action: Discussion (24 May 2022)

Pauline O'Reilly: Planning is difficult. I think it is a key part local authorities play. It relates to the kind of development we have, whether one-off housing, a more sustainable 15-minute city, or reinvigorating our town centres to make them more liveable. Is there somewhere to put targets in place for each local authority to have to adhere to? Do the witnesses recognise the role that plays in reducing...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Empowering Local Government and Local Communities to Climate Action: Discussion (24 May 2022)

Pauline O'Reilly: Ms Corcoran says things are moving in different directions and she is trying to catch things when they are already happening. It is a concern that many county and city development plans are nearing completion. Might there be a point where Ms Corcoran could come back to say they need to be re-examined earlier so that we are not waiting until the next round?
