Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Report on Child and Family Income Support: Discussion (20 Mar 2013)

Marie Moloney: I welcome the delegates. They had a difficult job, but at last somebody has tackled the issue. I wish to make some observations. On the make-up of the advisory group, I note with disappointment that it does not include a representative of the Children's Alliance, Barnardos, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul or the National Women's Council of Ireland. It is mostly made up of...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Report on Child and Family Income Support: Discussion (20 Mar 2013)

Marie Moloney: I have two brief questions. Has the advisory group looked at how the system will operate for separated couples concerning who will receive the child benefit? If there is shared custody of the children they do not get the one-parent family payments, so will both incomes be taken into account? Or will it be the income of the person with whom the child is living? I wonder how that will work....

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Report on Child and Family Income Support: Discussion (20 Mar 2013)

Marie Moloney: I presume that the figures the group takes into account are the gross figures. Do they include the family income supplement? If a family has an income plus the family income supplement, which figure will be used?

Marie Moloney: It would include the family income supplement.

Marie Moloney: I thought the delegation said that was the work in progress.

Seanad: Order of Business (21 Mar 2013)

Marie Moloney: I want to add my voice to the good wishes to Mr. Jimmy Walsh on his retirement. As other speakers have said, he has given the House excellent coverage in the newspapers. I thank him for that and wish him every happiness. On a number of occasions on the Order of Business and on social welfare debates in the House, I have raised the issue of people who are on illness benefit and applying for...

Seanad: Finance Bill 2013 [Certified Money Bill]: Committee and Remaining Stages (21 Mar 2013)

Seanad: Mobility Allowance: Statements (21 Mar 2013)

Marie Moloney: I thank the Leader for facilitating this debate. I would have preferred to have it when the Minister was here. I did call for the debate two weeks ago but unfortunately it was not put on the schedule. Time is passing while the working group is meeting, so it is important to debate the issue here. I would have preferred to have a Minister present but I am quite prepared to go ahead with...

Seanad: Philantrophy and Fund-raising: Motion (27 Mar 2013)

Marie Moloney: I thank the Independent Taoiseach's nominee Senators for introducing this motion and I compliment the Government on accepting it. It is a good day for the Seanad when these motions are accepted. I acknowledge some of the organisations that have worked hard without any State funding, such as Older and Bolder, which is now winding up, which will be a terrible loss after all the work it did for...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Whole-School Approaches to Mental Health and Bullying: Discussion (27 Mar 2013)

Marie Moloney: I will not keep the delegation long because, in fairness to it, it has covered many of the issues I was going to raise, particularly on raising awareness among and teaching parents. The latter is very important. I welcome the allocation of €500,000 for the action plan on bullying. While it is a step in the right direction, the funding will be very much diluted when divided between...
