Order of Business (28 Sep 2006)

Tom Kitt: In the context of yesterday's discussions and lengthy Leaders' Questions I refused the request for a special statement. In the light of this morning's debate and the Tánaiste's commitment, I agree to meet the Whips and in the spirit of co-operation agree procedures for next week. I give that commitment now and think we should meet as soon as possible, in the next hour or so.

Order of Business (28 Sep 2006)

Tom Kitt: We have traditionally tried by consensus to agree the Order of Business, as the Deputy knows well.

Business of Dáil: Motion (28 Sep 2006)

Tom Kitt: I move: That, notwithstanding anything in Standing Orders, on Tuesday, 3 October 2006, statements on disclosures relating to the Mahon tribunal shall be taken for 35 minutes on the conclusion of oral questions to members of the Government and the ordinary routine of business shall resume immediately thereafter with Leaders' Questions and the Order of Business. The following arrangements...

Business of Dáil: Motion (28 Sep 2006)

Tom Kitt: There are other opportunities open to Members to do that.

Business of Dáil: Motion (28 Sep 2006)

Tom Kitt: A meeting of the Whips took place and we discussed this matter at some length. As Members are aware, there are opportunities for those who can speak on Leaders' Questions to raise any question they wish under that procedure. Members also have the option to raise this matter by way of Private Members' business. Therefore, the proposal I put forward is the most reasonable one in these...

Allocation of Time: Motion. (3 Oct 2006)

Tom Kitt: I move: That, notwithstanding anything in Standing Orders or the Order of the Dáil on 28 September 2006: Statements on disclosures relating to the Mahon tribunal should be taken now for 45 minutes and the following arrangements shall apply: (i) the statement of the Taoiseach shall not exceed 15 minutes and the statements of the main spokespersons for the Fine Gael Party, the Labour Party and...

Written Answers — Unemployment Levels: Unemployment Levels (4 Oct 2006)

Tom Kitt: The exact information as requested by the Deputy is not available. Statistics on employment and unemployment are compiled, at a regional level, from the Quarterly National Household Survey. There are eight regions in the State; Border, Midland, West, Dublin, Mid-East, Mid-West, South-East and South-West. Sub-regional statistics, of the kind requested by the Deputy, are not available from...

Ministerial Rota for Parliamentary Questions: Motion. (10 Oct 2006)

Tom Kitt: I move: That, notwithstanding anything in the resolution of the Dáil of 6 June 2002, setting out the rota in which questions to members of the Government are to be asked, questions for oral answer, following those next set down to the Minister for Finance, shall be set down to Ministers in the following temporary sequence: Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources Minister...

Written Answers — Unemployment Levels: Unemployment Levels (10 Oct 2006)

Tom Kitt: The Live Register series gives a monthly breakdown of the number of people claiming Unemployment Assistance, Unemployment Benefit and other registrants as registered with the Department of Social and Family Affairs. Figures are published for each County and each Local Social Welfare Office. The exact information as requested by the Deputy is not available as there is no Local Office in...

Census of Population. (11 Oct 2006)

Tom Kitt: I propose to take Questions Nos. 1 and 2 together. The preliminary report of the 2006 census, carried out on Sunday, 23 April 2006, was published on 19 July 2006. The report was compiled using headcount information compiled by each of the 4,400 enumerators based on the completed census forms for their respective enumeration areas. The following were the highlights of the preliminary census...

Census of Population. (11 Oct 2006)

Tom Kitt: The simple answer is no. I did not receive any communication from the CSO regarding any possible underestimation of the figures. As the Deputy is aware, the definitive counts will be delivered and announced next year. I may have stated previously on Question Time that there were 4,400 enumerators who were employed to deliver and collect census forms. Each was responsible for an...

Census of Population. (11 Oct 2006)

Tom Kitt: With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I can make a brief comment on that matter. On the Deputy's first question, however, I will ask the CSO to communicate directly with him on the anecdotal evidence in his possession regarding issues of access etc. and difficulties that may have arisen. With regard to the future work of the CSO, I understand that during next year it will issue...

Census of Population. (11 Oct 2006)

Tom Kitt: On the first question, the figure for Dublin North is 29,996 and Dublin West is in excess of 30,000. This is extremely relevant to the earlier discussion. As for the use to which these figures will be put, having worked as the Minister of State with responsibility for the CSO, I am conscious — as are others — of the tremendous value these figures offer to legislators, the Government,...

Census of Population. (11 Oct 2006)

Tom Kitt: Most definitely, no one is delaying anything in this regard. As I noted earlier, something like 16 publications are planned and promised before the end of 2007. That is the specific commitment made by the CSO. Hence, it has a carefully planned programme of work to undertake. I am not in a position to comment on the differentiation between the preliminary and definitive figures. We must...

Census of Population. (11 Oct 2006)

Tom Kitt: I expect that they will be published early next year, perhaps around April. We have to wait.

Census of Population. (11 Oct 2006)

Tom Kitt: It is not late.

Census of Population. (11 Oct 2006)

Tom Kitt: Can I respond to Deputy Sargent, with whom I served at local authority level for some time? The Deputy mentioned Fingal Development Board. I would like to add to what I said earlier in that regard. I am aware that Fingal County Council is one of the most progressive local authorities when it comes to planning for the future. I am conscious of the tremendous work of South Dublin and Dún...

Unemployment Levels. (11 Oct 2006)

Tom Kitt: The exact information requested by the Deputy is not available. Statistics on employment and unemployment are compiled at a regional level from the quarterly national household survey. There are eight regions in the State — Border, midland, west, Dublin, mid-east, mid-west, south east and south west. Sub-regional statistics of the type requested by the Deputy are not available from the...

Unemployment Levels. (11 Oct 2006)

Tom Kitt: I am happy to assist the Deputy, who is famous for promoting the interests of Tallaght. We all admire him for that. It is clear that the employment news is good. I have mentioned the results of the quarterly national household survey and the state of the live register. Over 2 million people were in employment in this State in the second quarter of this year. That figure comprises Irish...
