Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: General Scheme of Israeli Settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territory (Prohibition of Importation of Goods) Bill 2025: Discussion (Resumed) (2 Jul 2025)

John Lahart: I thank Senator Black for her warm words. If members of the public are viewing this meeting, there is a call for written submissions on the Oireachtas website. We want to get though our work reasonably quickly. Written submissions have to be in by this day week. It is a short enough window but people who are exercised by this ought to have a reasonable idea of what they want to say and...

Written Answers — Department of Finance: Tax Reliefs (3 Jul 2025)

John Lahart: 177. To ask the Minister for Finance if he will consider introducing a temporary tax relief or reimbursement scheme for families who incurred out-of-pocket expenses for private dental check-ups for their children, due to the suspension or delay of HSE dental services during and following the Covid-19 pandemic; the options currently available to such families under existing tax or PRSI-based...

Written Answers — Department of Education and Skills: Special Educational Needs (3 Jul 2025)

John Lahart: 203. To ask the Minister for Education and Skills the reason there was a reduction in special needs assistant support for a school (details supplied); and if she will make a statement on the matter. [36688/25]

Post-European Council: Statements (9 Jul 2025)

John Lahart: On the subject of our contributions, we had the Gates Foundation in yesterday. It was about maternal and child health. Ireland remains up there with just the Nordic countries and the Dutch in retaining that level of support. We are beacons in the ocean of development aid funding, but specifically in that area. The Minister of State may want to comment further.

Ceisteanna ar Sonraíodh Uain Dóibh (Atógáil) - Priority Questions (Resumed): Foreign Policy (10 Jul 2025)

John Lahart: 6. To ask the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade for a report on his engagement with other EU member states with regard to Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [38587/25]

Ceisteanna ar Sonraíodh Uain Dóibh (Atógáil) - Priority Questions (Resumed): Foreign Policy (10 Jul 2025)

John Lahart: I want to ask the Tánaiste about the special tribunal for the crime of aggression against Ukraine, which we hope will be able to investigate and prosecute senior government and military leaders responsible for the crime of aggression up to and including heads of state. He might update the House in that regard.

Ceisteanna ar Sonraíodh Uain Dóibh (Atógáil) - Priority Questions (Resumed): Foreign Policy (10 Jul 2025)

John Lahart: What is interesting from listening to the debates here in the past week is the criticism of the Government about its stance on the Iranian regime from some of the far left voices in the House and a complete ignorance about who supplies an awful lot of these drones to Russia to continuously attack a part of Europe. I understand the special tribunal I referred to in the question is the first...

Ceisteanna ar Sonraíodh Uain Dóibh (Atógáil) - Priority Questions (Resumed): Foreign Policy (10 Jul 2025)

John Lahart: As Chair of the Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, I met the ambassador recently. I am a little concerned that so much time in the House is spent on Gaza, which I understand, particularly as Chair of the committee, is justified, that Ukraine has slipped down the agenda and we need to keep it up. The continued acceleration of attacks by Russia poses a significant threat to the...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: EU Meetings (10 Jul 2025)

John Lahart: I was interested to hear what the Minister of State said, following the conversation we had in the Chamber yesterday. I mentioned the Gates Foundation. He re-emphasised Ireland's commitment to overseas development. That is good news in a world where the cuts in US aid have been described by aid agencies as irreplaceable and having a significant impact. The security piece is important. ...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: EU Meetings (10 Jul 2025)

John Lahart: I thank the Minister of State. Our political grouping at EU level, Renew Europe, has some positive ideas. It proposed reinforced provisions to promote democratic resilience, including something that is close to the heart of this Government, which is funding support for independent media, investigative journalism and fact checking. I understand the Estonians are way ahead of the rest of...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Diplomatic Representation (10 Jul 2025)

John Lahart: What does the Tánaiste consider the best response to the comments by the chair of the United States foreign relations committee that the occupied territories Bill is blatantly antisemitic?

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Diplomatic Representation (10 Jul 2025)

John Lahart: I welcome and echo the Tánaiste's remarks. The small Jewish community in my constituency of Dublin South-West feels particularly vulnerable at times of protest. Outside our relationship with the UK and the European Union, we have a unique relationship with the United States. This issue provides an opportunity, not to review it but to move forward with a different kind of dynamic....

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Diplomatic Representation (10 Jul 2025)

John Lahart: I echo the Tánaiste's comments regarding our diplomats. The week of St. Patrick's Day is a particularly important week for Ireland. Is it time to look at mobilising more politicians, outside of just Ministers and Ministers of State, to engage at state House level in the United States, open up a new conversation with American legislators and mobilise our considerable diaspora? There...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: General Scheme of Israeli Settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territory (Prohibition of Importation of Goods) Bill 2025: Discussion (Resumed) (9 Jul 2025)

John Lahart: I advise members of the constitutional requirement that members must be physically present within the confines of the Leinster House complex to participate in public meetings. I will not permit a member to participate where he or she is not adhering to this constitutional requirement. Therefore, a member who attempts to participate from outside the precincts of Leinster House will be asked...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: General Scheme of Israeli Settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territory (Prohibition of Importation of Goods) Bill 2025: Discussion (Resumed) (9 Jul 2025)

John Lahart: I just need to pause the professor for a moment. A vote has been called in the Dáil Chamber so I will ask the Vice Chair to take the chair. Is that agreed? Agreed. The professor may continue. I apologise for the interruption.

Written Answers — Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade: Ukraine War (10 Jul 2025)

John Lahart: 66. To ask the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade if Ireland is supporting the work of the Special Tribunal for the Crime of Aggression against Ukraine recently established by the Council of Europe; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [37917/25]
