David Stanton: Dr. Brennan's documentation stated that it will reduce transaction time, reduce costs, reduce service delays, improve transparency of the process, reduce risk, meet the demand for electronic service delivery, increase consumer confidence in the process and so on. That is a win-win situation, as Deputy Ferris has said. We are anxious that the initiative is moved on as quickly as possible and...
- Public Health (Standardised Packaging of Tobacco) Bill 2014 [Seanad]: Second Stage (Resumed) (2 Oct 2014)
David Stanton: I welcome this legislation. Any initiative we can bring forward to reduce the use of tobacco and the smoking of cigarettes is to be welcomed; there is no doubt about that. This is a big, powerful and very profitable industry. It is also an industry that has, as some colleagues have already noted, a considerable and growing area of illegality. Counterfeit and contraband cigarettes are...

David Stanton: As it happens, just this morning we received a communique on foot of an inter-parliamentary meeting that was held on September 17 in Paris, which I will circulate. - Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Proposal to Establish a European Public Prosecutor's Office: Discussion (8 Oct 2014)

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Proposal to Establish a European Public Prosecutor's Office: Discussion (8 Oct 2014)
David Stanton: We have to very careful about the resources we have because we are very limited in that. The other issue is that our Parliament is developing a committee system now much more than it had in the past. Other parliaments are way ahead of us on this. The parliaments themselves and jurisdictions have far more say and authority than we have here, though it is changing slowly. I am not sure...

David Stanton: I thank Ms Logan for her interesting contribution. The commissioners engaged with us on their appointments as there was an issue relating to how they were to be appointed. It was very important that the Executive be seen to be at arm's length in the process. This all-party Oireachtas committee undertook to meet the commissioners designate and we were very impressed with them - at the time...
