Maurice Cummins: Senator Mooney raised a question on an MRBI opinion poll. While we all accept opinion polls are a snapshot in time, I can assure him that the Government intends to be there for the next 12 months and work for the people in providing more jobs.

Maurice Cummins: This was especially evident yesterday when it was announced that unemployment was down to 10.7%. It is still too high, but it is a massive improvement on the position when we came into office where 250,000 jobs had been lost in the previous three years.

Maurice Cummins: Some 144,645 persons have left the live register in the past 12 months. Obviously, we are not getting the good news out to the people. I can assure Deputy Mooney that we will emphasis the good news for the next 12 months, and maybe more.

Maurice Cummins: Senator Mooney also raised the question of boarded up housing and I assure him that is part of the housing strategy. Many of them are already under reconstruction. It will be a priority in the housing strategy that these houses be put back into use for those who need them.

Maurice Cummins: The county managers have been informed about them. There is the Internet. One need not call in the county managers. One can notify them by e-mail and that has been done. They all have been notified. They have been asked for their plans and they have been given funding. What more can be done in that area? The houses are being reconstructed.
