Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Politically Exposed Persons: Discussion (5 Oct 2022)

Bernard Durkan: I agree entirely with the Chairman. I was one of the first people in this House to take issue with this directive. Other colleagues at the time said they did not know about this directive. They did not know about it, but it is there. I find it unfair because those who fall into this category, such as politicians and their families and associates, are treated more stringently and...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Politically Exposed Persons: Discussion (5 Oct 2022)

Bernard Durkan: I will be happy to hear a response to my outburst. It is not something I oppose lightly. I opposed it from the beginning. Family members opposed it too. They feel that they should not be accused because somebody in a high vaulted tower accuses me, for example. I do not encourage and I do not involve myself in any kind of financial manipulation. If anyone wants to accuse me of that, let...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Politically Exposed Persons: Discussion (5 Oct 2022)

Bernard Durkan: The European Parliament has new powers.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Politically Exposed Persons: Discussion (5 Oct 2022)

Bernard Durkan: I am concerned about lending institutions being not politically exposed but acting politically. That is something that myself and others have referred to in the past. They are strict and ruthless in the way they handle the powers and information they have over individuals. That would be justified on the basis that they need to know what people are doing but nobody knows what the banks are...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Construction of the National Children’s Hospital: Discussion (5 Oct 2022)

Bernard Durkan: I apologise that was not possible for me to visit the hospital in July, as I had Covid around that time. I did not think it would be a good time to visit a hospital when there was the possibility of spreading it. I congratulate all involved, including the development board etc., for bringing to this stage a massive development of worldwide importance and on such a scale as to amaze me and...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Construction of the National Children’s Hospital: Discussion (5 Oct 2022)

Bernard Durkan: What about an ongoing programme to illustrate the benefits of the project to the health of children, the project's necessity and the degree to which the project is still as close as possible to budget as any other project notwithstanding Covid and all the other things that intervened in the meantime? What about a campaign to promote it because there are plenty of people willing to denigrate it?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Construction of the National Children’s Hospital: Discussion (5 Oct 2022)

Bernard Durkan: A progress report to show the success, benefits and positive side of the project, as opposed to what many people want to show as a negative side is very important. Is there anything of concern that Mr. Tierney might like to share with the committee regarding the project at this time?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Construction of the National Children’s Hospital: Discussion (5 Oct 2022)

Bernard Durkan: I will finish by congratulating St. James's Hospital, again on the basis of a recent visit, for continuing to provide a high quality of service in the middle of a building site and continuing with its functions in the way it would have expected to in any event. Doing so on a building site makes it all the more difficult. I congratulate them on that.

Disability Services: Motion [Private Members] (11 Oct 2022)

Bernard Durkan: Thank you, Deputy.

Disability Services: Motion [Private Members] (11 Oct 2022)

Bernard Durkan: We have to be fair to the other Deputies.

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: School Transport (11 Oct 2022)

Bernard Durkan: I echo the comments of the previous speakers and acknowledge the tremendous work that the Minister has done and undertaken and is pursuing in this regard. To shorten the road ahead I suggest that the students that remain off-list and who cannot avail of transport and get a ticket be catered for by way of concessionary payment. At least it would remove the immediate problem. That is not to...
