Seanad: Defamation Bill 2006 [Seanad Bill amended by the Dáil] : Report and Final Stages (9 Jul 2009)

David Norris: Nein, nein. Or even 666. This is a serious point.

Seanad: Defamation Bill 2006 [Seanad Bill amended by the Dáil] : Report and Final Stages (9 Jul 2009)

David Norris: I want to show where this could lead. I am a great admirer of Fr. Brian D'Arcy. He has done enormously important work as a broadcaster and writer and has held out a lifeline to people whose lives have been fractured by personal circumstances of one kind or another. He is also a man I genuinely admire intensely. Fr. D'Arcy has the courage of his convictions and, in a gentlemanly way,...

Seanad: Defamation Bill 2006 [Seanad Bill amended by the Dáil] : Report and Final Stages (9 Jul 2009)

David Norris: I thank the Minister for the courteous and interesting way with which he dealt with the Bill. I do not agree with him on the legislation and, unlike my colleague, Senator Bacik, I objected to many of its principal clauses. I urged my case but the Minister did not accept it. I found his interventions illuminating and interesting, particularly the story he told yesterday about a couple and...

Seanad: Defamation Bill 2006 [Seanad Bill amended by the Dáil] : Report and Final Stages (9 Jul 2009)

David Norris: In any case, the Minister is always interesting. My only regret is that due to the frailties of the flesh, which I have just demonstrated in another sense, I was deprived of his presence during the discussion of the Bill. I will continue to be an adherent of the cult of which he is at the centre.

Seanad: Order of Business (10 Jul 2009)

David Norris: Would it be as good as the Lisbon treaty that the Senator's lot did not bother reading?

Seanad: Order of Business (10 Jul 2009)

David Norris: I endorse the comments made by other Members that we are being made totally irrelevant by the chaotic management of business and the rushing through of legislation. I have just been listening to one of our distinguished colleagues, the only one of our group who did not speak on the Defamation Bill, doing an extremely good job on Pat Kenny. That shows that the radio is much more relevant...

Seanad: Order of Business (10 Jul 2009)

David Norris: No. I am proposing an amendment that instead we take as the first item a discussion on the rushing of legislation through this House.

Seanad: Order of Business (10 Jul 2009)

David Norris: It is not a bit irrelevant. It is a lot more relevant than you are, Senator Leyden.

Seanad: Order of Business (10 Jul 2009)

David Norris: As we say in Irish, aithníonn ciaróg ciaróg eile. You are a fine flourishing ciaróg over there.

Seanad: Order of Business (10 Jul 2009)

David Norris: Interestingly, the Minister's phone went off yesterday but he indicated he had a special exemption because it was necessary for him to be in touch with gardaí at all times.

Seanad: Order of Business (10 Jul 2009)

David Norris: That is even more interesting and I hope the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform will be reminded of that in future.

Seanad: Order of Business (10 Jul 2009)

David Norris: I applaud that ruling.

Seanad: Order of Business (10 Jul 2009)

David Norris: The Senator should table a matter on the Adjournment.

Seanad: Order of Business (10 Jul 2009)

David Norris: A Chathaoirligh, before you call the Leader, I wish to raise what may be a point of order. If not, I am sure you will guide me. I know there is an interest in conservation in the House, but for the past two days there has been no paper for making notes. Is there an explanation for this?

Seanad: Order of Business (10 Jul 2009)

David Norris: I hope this is not something to be reported to the Committee on Procedure and Privileges because it has not met within living memory.

Seanad: Order of Business (10 Jul 2009)

David Norris: This is a great tune. It is a pity the Leader cannot accompany it on the saxophone.

Seanad: Order of Business (10 Jul 2009)

David Norris: Will we get a look at Peewee's big idea?

Seanad: Order of Business (10 Jul 2009)

David Norris: On a point of order, this is confusing. Yesterday, Senator Cassidy referred to his constituency colleague, but we are all his constituency colleagues. The Leader's constituency comprises the county councillors and it is the same for Senator McFadden. They have no geographical constituency whatever.

Seanad: Order of Business (10 Jul 2009)

David Norris: Yes.

Seanad: OECD and IMF Reports: Statements (10 Jul 2009)

David Norris: I wish to share time equally with Senator Quinn.
