- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Vaginal Mesh Implants: Discussion (29 Jun 2022)
Bernard Durkan: May I make a suggestion before we close?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Vaginal Mesh Implants: Discussion (29 Jun 2022)
Bernard Durkan: As we will be returning to this subject again, would it be unreasonable to ask the HSE to carry out whatever is required of it in order to reassure the women from whom we have all heard and restore their confidence with regard to the methodology, manner and treatment and also to ascertain that where pauses have taken place in other countries, they have not been without some reason? Could the...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Vaginal Mesh Implants: Discussion (29 Jun 2022)
Bernard Durkan: Just a second. Hold on a second. Has the HSE accorded sufficient importance to this particular issue and at such a scale as to be able to respond positively and completely?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Vaginal Mesh Implants: Discussion (29 Jun 2022)
Bernard Durkan: Can I ask the question the Chairman suggested was for the HSE, which related to the degree to which the HSE has responded to the concerns, pain and suffering, and great isolation of women who have been the victims? Is the HSE satisfied it has responded with sufficient urgency and that there is a high-level alert in respect of the issue within the organisation?
- Committee on Budgetary Oversight: Updated Economic and Fiscal Position in Advance of Budget 2023: Discussion (7 Sep 2022)
Bernard Durkan: I welcome our guests and thank them for their statements. It is no harm to ponder what happened over the past couple of years and the advice we politicians got. We were regularly told there was no need for a rainy day fund, for example. We did not have a substantial rainy day fund but we did have borrowing capacity, which we would not have had if we had diverted our energies in a different...

- Committee on Budgetary Oversight: Updated Economic and Fiscal Position in Advance of Budget 2023: Discussion (7 Sep 2022)
Bernard Durkan: I thank our guests for coming before the committee and for their presentations. I have a number of questions. The witnesses from the NERI mentioned tax cuts and their effect. This is an issue on which a debate is taking place in the country at present. The theory is that there should be no tax cuts. I do not think this applies to all sectors. There are groups of people, in the lower to...

- Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Family Law Cases (14 Sep 2022)
Bernard Durkan: I thank the Ceann Comhairle for allowing me to raise this issue. It is an important issue and I thank the Minister for coming into the House to address it. I know this family well. In a family law procedure, both sides have an opportunity to make their case and have it challenged. In the case of this particular woman, she was greeted with a child psychology report, which was accepted...
- Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Family Law Cases (14 Sep 2022)
Bernard Durkan: The Minister has answered the questions himself. It is imperative that Tusla get involved in the case. The court directing that it is not welcome is, to my mind, a violation of the mother's rights, which cannot be tolerated. I ask the Minister to encourage Tusla to get involved in the case to secure the children's rights. Presumably, the court psychologist's report would back that up, but...

- Committee on Budgetary Oversight: Updated Economic and Fiscal Position in Advance of Budget 2023: Discussion (Resumed) (14 Sep 2022)
Bernard Durkan: I firstly compliment the two Ministers on their handling of the economy in challenging times, that will remain challenging for some considerable time. We all wish them well in their endeavours over the next couple of weeks. I have a couple of pieces of advice from somebody who was around. I was not a Member of this House in the 1970s. A strange thing that happened with energy in the 1970s...
