Joint Committee On Children, Equality, Disability, Integration And Youth: Strengthening Prevention and Early Intervention Supports to Children and Families Post Pandemic: Prevention & Early Intervention Network (9 Nov 2021)

Mary Seery Kearney: Thank you very much Chair. I thank Dr. O'Dwyer for that opening statement, which I really appreciate. I am very struck by the statement that there are good policies in place, but it is about the implementation of those policies. We see reports like yesterday's drug task force report and the research done by the Tallaght drug task force, and it would be mirrored in the one I chair in Dublin...

Joint Committee On Children, Equality, Disability, Integration And Youth: Strengthening Prevention and Early Intervention Supports to Children and Families Post Pandemic: Prevention & Early Intervention Network (9 Nov 2021)

Mary Seery Kearney: One of the impediments I see is around recruitment and filling gaps and shortages. Where has Mr. Chance seen that manifest itself in terms of what he would like to see prioritised? Does he have any ideas on how to change that?

Mary Seery Kearney: I am good for now, Chair.

Joint Committee On Children, Equality, Disability, Integration And Youth: Strengthening Prevention and Early Intervention Supports to Children and Families Post Pandemic: Prevention & Early Intervention Network (9 Nov 2021)

Mary Seery Kearney: From the early years perspective, the Fine Gael Party carried out a body of research recently that showed parents were very happy with the quality of their service providers, but they did not have a diversity of choice. We do not have sport in early childhood, for example. Deputy Dillon, who is here, would be very much into sport and supporting that. We would like to have that diversity...

Joint Committee On Children, Equality, Disability, Integration And Youth: Child Poverty: Discussion (9 Nov 2021)

Mary Seery Kearney: To follow on from that, where schools do not comply, and very clearly they do not, what kind of sanction should we put in place to induce them to ensure that they do? There are very clear violations of this, as we hear every September.

Joint Committee On Children, Equality, Disability, Integration And Youth: Child Poverty: Discussion (9 Nov 2021)

Mary Seery Kearney: How you sanction that is a difficulty when you also have to deal with a patron body, when there are disparities. My child's school has a second-hand uniform sale every year and everyone is encouraged to go down that route rather than anything else. You cannot tell as everyone that is in a uniform that maybe older and it does not matter. It is probably a badge of honour at this stage. I...

Joint Committee On Children, Equality, Disability, Integration And Youth: Child Poverty: Discussion (9 Nov 2021)

Mary Seery Kearney: I thank Ms Byrne. I am so sorry for her loss. There is no doubt that she had a difficult time. She sums up the experience of being in a community. There is a lovely moment in her video where she says that they fit in, which is powerful. What exactly did Focus Ireland do? How did it support Ms Byrne?

Joint Committee On Children, Equality, Disability, Integration And Youth: Child Poverty: Discussion (9 Nov 2021)

Mary Seery Kearney: I thank Ms Byrne. She is an exceptional mother and role model. I would be interested in anything that anyone has to say on local authority allocations. "Frustrating" is the politest word I can come up with about it.

Joint Committee On Children, Equality, Disability, Integration And Youth: Child Poverty: Discussion (9 Nov 2021)

Mary Seery Kearney: It is a challenge.

Joint Committee On Children, Equality, Disability, Integration And Youth: Child Poverty: Discussion (9 Nov 2021)

Mary Seery Kearney: It is less stigmatising for that short period. It makes much more sense and is much more focused on dignity. I thank the witnesses. I apologise that I need to leave the meeting now to go to the Seanad.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (16 Nov 2021)

Mary Seery Kearney: I raise awareness about a partnership between Women’s Aid and the Hair and Beauty Industry Confederation Ireland, HABIC. The two organisations have come together to bring about an awareness campaign on domestic violence. The campaign will assist hair salons in being able to identify the ten common signs of abuse. The salons are being supplied with resource packs. It may well be...

Joint Committee On Children, Equality, Disability, Integration And Youth: Experiences of Migrant Communities Engaging with the Healthcare System and State Bodies: Discussion (16 Nov 2021)

Mary Seery Kearney: I thank our guests for their contributions and opening statements. For the representatives of Safetynet Primary Care, how do their patients connect with their organisation? How do they know it is there to avail of its services? I note annex 1 to the written submission it provided sets out the various services on offer. I ask Dr. O'Reilly and Dr. Skuce to elaborate on that because it is...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (18 Nov 2021)

Mary Seery Kearney: I refer to what occurred at the meeting this morning of the Joint Committee on Disability Matters. Four witnesses attended who all have distinct chronic illnesses. They talked about their experience of having to grapple with an illness for which we do not have a consultant or specialist in the State. While grappling with their illness, they are charged with the requirement to go from Billy...
