Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: A Safe and Respectful Working Environment in the Arts: Discussion (16 Feb 2022)

Johnny Mythen: The first question I asked was on the pilot basic income scheme. Do the organisations believe there should be firm terms and conditions within that scheme to address the issues they are raising?

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: A Safe and Respectful Working Environment in the Arts: Discussion (16 Feb 2022)

Johnny Mythen: To clarify, when there is a notification that someone has done something wrong, what actually happens to that person? What powers are there in that regard? Will Ms Traynor give us an example of what happens in that case?

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: A Safe and Respectful Working Environment in the Arts: Discussion (16 Feb 2022)

Johnny Mythen: I was going to ask the same question as Senator Byrne did. It struck me that in the research that it is mostly men who are the perpetrators of these assaults, etc. How can that psyche be changed through the witnesses' organisations? It seems to be that it is overbalanced. Are men willing to come forward and speak out about it as well? Perhaps that should be a starting point.

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Accessibility for Individuals with Disabilities in Arts and Culture: Discussion (16 Feb 2022)

Johnny Mythen: I thank all the witnesses, particularly Ms McLaughlin and Ms Millar. I will first ask all the witnesses about the recent basic pilot scheme introduced by the Minister. The basic income pilot scheme could see disabled artists excluded because it would bring their income over the income threshold. Has this issue been resolved or have their colleagues raised it with them? How can we ensure...

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Accessibility for Individuals with Disabilities in Arts and Culture: Discussion (16 Feb 2022)

Johnny Mythen: I have a quick question I meant to ask at the beginning. We have spoken a lot about involving artists with a disability in the visual arts and theatre. Is there support for movement-based arts such as dance? Will the witnesses comment on what supports might be needed to make these spaces more accessible?

An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (1 Mar 2022)

Johnny Mythen: I have raised several times in this House the situation of the hundreds of carers and their families who are awaiting life-changing home support services in County Wexford. More than 600 families are in that situation, with 227 awaiting further services. An internal review of these highly unsatisfactory waiting lists for the home care service in Wexford was conducted in November 2021....

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Online Disinformation and Media Literacy: Ms Frances Haugen (23 Feb 2022)

Johnny Mythen: I thank Ms Haugen for her guts and grit. The world owes her a debt of gratitude for exposing the system. How important is it that correct and transparent data is mandated and made available to the commission by high-tech companies?

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Online Disinformation and Media Literacy: Ms Frances Haugen (23 Feb 2022)

Johnny Mythen: I thank Ms Haugen. I am particularly concerned about the workforce behind the monitoring of the platforms and their content. Could Ms Haugen comment on the protection, or lack thereof, for the Facebook staff who have to review the content that has clearly been deemed harmful or potentially harmful? Are there workers' rights issues in this regard?

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Online Disinformation and Media Literacy: Ms Frances Haugen (23 Feb 2022)

Johnny Mythen: Does Ms Haugen believe protections for whistleblowers are strong enough? Do they need to be strengthened in legislation?

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Online Disinformation and Media Literacy: Ms Frances Haugen (23 Feb 2022)

Johnny Mythen: We have heard from many NGOs and charities during our deliberations on this Bill that are working at the coalface of the fallout of online harm, especially to children. How important is it for these NGOs to have a real voice in regulations such as our online safety Bill?

Situation in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including the recent Amnesty International Report: Statements (2 Mar 2022)

Johnny Mythen: The report by Amnesty International is a scathing indictment of the policies of the state of Israel towards the Palestinian people. It is not an easy read. It sets out a catalogue of oppression, state discrimination and the widespread denial of basic human rights. It contains graphic detail on what it is like to live under apartheid, which is a series of criminal policies carefully...

Flexible and Remote Work: Motion [Private Members] (9 Mar 2022)

Johnny Mythen: I welcome the motion before this House and thank my Labour Party colleagues for bringing it forward. The impact of the pandemic on the nation’s mental health is significant. We will be dealing with the fallout from the trauma and tragedy for many years to come. We need to recognise this as we formalise our policies and in how we organise society from here on in. A good start to...

Proposal for a Council Decision on Hate Speech and Hate Crime: Motion (9 Mar 2022)

Johnny Mythen: Hate speech and hate crime have become more prominent and divisive in the present era than any other time in history. For example, the American elections, the referendum on Brexit and the pandemic brought these manifestations to the fore.
