- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Teacher Recruitment: Discussion (Resumed) (24 Apr 2018)
Kathleen Funchion: I will begin by apologising for being late. I thank all of the speakers for their presentations. I would be completely opposed to any sort of live streaming of classes. As the mother of two boys, I would absolutely refuse to send my children to school if that was the level we reached. That is completely unacceptable. Students need to have a teacher to whom they can speak if they have a...

- Nurses' and Midwives' Pay and Recruitment: Motion [Private Members] (25 Apr 2018)
Kathleen Funchion: I commend my colleague, Deputy O'Reilly, on her excellent ongoing work on this issue. Nurses and midwives play a very positive role in the health services. They are at the front line and often deal with very difficult situations. Nurses are sometimes expected to be almost social workers and counsellors in addition to their healthcare role, since people often open up more to nurses or to...
- Sex Offenders (Amendment) Bill 2018: Second Stage [Private Members] (1 May 2018)
Kathleen Funchion: Like others, I commend Deputy O'Sullivan, not only on bringing this Bill forward but on all of her work in this area. As Deputy Ó Laoghaire has stated, we will be supporting this Bill. It is a welcome step to protect children in extremely vulnerable positions. This Bill will allow judges to make a decision on a convicted sex offender's ability to travel outside the State based on the...

- Mental Health Parity Bill 2017: Second Stage [Private Members] (2 May 2018)
Kathleen Funchion: I take this time to speak specifically about the child and adolescent mental health services, CAMHS. I speak as a parent of someone who has had personal experience. It is an issue close to home for me. I do not want to talk about the waiting times because we all know there are significant delays in getting into CAMHS. The waiting times are disgraceful. There is nothing we can say about...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: Tackling Childhood Obesity: Discussion (Resumed) (2 May 2018)
Kathleen Funchion: Much of this problem is due to a lack of finance for families. The reality is that it is easier and cheaper to eat badly. It is much easier to buy a frozen pizza from Lidl than it is to buy fresh vegetables and fruit. Also, in rural areas there might be only one local shop so options are limited. We also need to consider how snack-type foods are marketed. When one enters any garage one...

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: Tackling Childhood Obesity: Discussion (Resumed) (2 May 2018)
Kathleen Funchion: Another reason is that there is zero support at the hospital level given to first-time mothers. If one is struggling to cope with a new baby one may think breastfeeding is one option one can dispense with, and choose to bottle feed as others will find it easier to help with that. Unfortunately, that is the reality.
