Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Sub-Committee on Penal Reform: Penal Reform: Discussion (19 Dec 2012)

Martin Conway: I had questions initially but it has been clarified in the latter contributions. The standard of the contributions and submissions are very high. I would have been familiar with the work of Focus Ireland but to a lesser extent with the Cornmarket Project and Care After Prison. Both these groups have had remarkable success in a year. How has Ms Grogan found her interaction with the...

Seanad: Order of Business (20 Dec 2012)

Martin Conway: Hear, hear. Well said.

Seanad: Order of Business (20 Dec 2012)

Martin Conway: For many months, I have been standing up on the Order of Business questioning the role of the public interest directors in the banks.

Seanad: Order of Business (20 Dec 2012)

Martin Conway: Hang on a second, a Chathaoirligh, I did not mention any name and I will not. I want due process as well. I have spoken about the role of the public interest directors in the banks before and I believe the whole lot of them should be sacked. We need to redefine the role of public interest directors and introduce legislation to ensure their main role and responsibility is to serve the...

Seanad: Order of Business (20 Dec 2012)

Martin Conway: I am entitled to my view.

Seanad: Order of Business (20 Dec 2012)

Martin Conway: Legal institutions need to be reformed.

Seanad: Order of Business (20 Dec 2012)

Martin Conway: We have been promised the legal services Bill and I would like to see its introduction soon. Yesterday, comments were made about Government Senators and their lack of attendance in the House. People have objected to universal payments and how wrong they are.

Seanad: Order of Business (20 Dec 2012)

Martin Conway: Universal comments are wrong too. I stand over my record in this House.

Seanad: Order of Business (20 Dec 2012)

Martin Conway: I attend and speak in this House every day.

Seanad: Order of Business (20 Dec 2012)

Martin Conway: As far as I am concerned, my integrity and attendance here are relevant. I am proud of my record and I will not have it denigrated.

Seanad: Order of Business (20 Dec 2012)

Martin Conway: With that, I would like to wish you a happy Christmas, a Chathaoirligh.

Seanad: Order of Business (20 Dec 2012)

Martin Conway: Well said.

Seanad: Order of Business (20 Dec 2012)

Martin Conway: I will not forget it.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: Implementation of Government Decision Following Expert Group Report into Matters Relating to A, B and C v. Ireland (10 Jan 2013)

Martin Conway: The proceedings have been enlightening. We have witnesses here from both the pro-choice and pro-life sides of this deliberation, but I would hope that from these proceedings we will see a pro-common sense approach to dealing with this problem. I have one question, specifically for Youth Defence. I would consider some of the campaigning Youth Defence has done in the past barbaric to say...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: Implementation of Government Decision Following Expert Group Report into Matters Relating to A, B and C v. Ireland (10 Jan 2013)

Martin Conway: In this morning's session I was very critical of one of the groups because of its past behaviour. In the interest of balance and because language is important, I note that the language used on the websites of some of the groups before us is inappropriate and unfair. We need a mature discussion of this issue because the vast majority of the people who look to us as parliamentarians for a...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: Implementation of Government Decision Following Expert Group Report into Matters Relating to A, B and C v. Ireland (10 Jan 2013)

Martin Conway: I am coming to it. I have not spoken much in the past three days.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: Implementation of Government Decision Following Expert Group Report into Matters Relating to A, B and C v. Ireland (10 Jan 2013)

Martin Conway: If the principles of X were to be followed through in legislation, what protection will be offered to a child who is discovered to have a serious disability so that an abortion does not take place?

Seanad: Order of Business (22 Jan 2013)

Martin Conway: I do not wish to comment on the case that other Senators, including Senator Darragh O'Brien, have alluded to. In general, however, for less serious crimes than the one we are talking about, the principle of restorative justice needs to be considered. In this country restorative justice has been piloted in two areas - south County Dublin and Nenagh - and it is now being established in North...

Seanad: Adjournment Matters: Fuel Rebate Scheme (22 Jan 2013)

Martin Conway: I welcome the Minister of State, Deputy Perry, and wish him a very successful 2013. If 2012 is anything to go by, he will certainly make a significant difference in terms of creating jobs, which is a passion close to his heart. This matter relates to job retention as well as job creation. The announcement in the last budget that a rebate structure would be put in place for the road...

Seanad: Adjournment Matters: Fuel Rebate Scheme (22 Jan 2013)

Martin Conway: I thank the Minister of State for delivering the reply. The vast majority of his reply outlined the reasons a fuel rebate could not be applied but at the end he said that the matter would be considered "in the context of the finance Bill."
