Shannon Airport: Motion (11 Dec 2012)

Luke Flanagan: What is happening might have the potential to be good news for Shannon Airport, but I am obliged to wonder why it is being done at the expense of Knock Airport. The Minister appeared to be explicit in this regard. Knock Airport is situated in County Mayo, some 20 miles from where I live, and one of the few success stories in the area. It is a beacon of hope for those who of us who live in...

Social Welfare Bill 2012: Second Stage (11 Dec 2012)

Luke Flanagan: I would like to have more time, but, unfortunately, the Government does not like dissent or to hear about the reality. The Minister for Social Protection, Deputy Joan Burton, stated social protection had high priority in the Bill. I wonder how that fits in with a quote from one of the organisations affected by the budget which stated the Minister was "breaking the backs of those who need a...

Confidence in the Government: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members] (12 Dec 2012)

Luke Flanagan: At this stage even the Christians do not believe we should have confidence in the Government. I am not a Christian - I am agnostic - but I understand Fine Gael is meant to be a Christian democratic party. I received a letter from a priest today. It includes a sermon in which reference is made to the "wilderness" carers have been in since the last budget. The priest asked me to represent...

Social Welfare Bill 2012: Committee Stage (Resumed) and Remaining Stages (13 Dec 2012)

Luke Flanagan: In this country we hear a great deal about respect for institutions and various different things but from what I have seen during the past week this is the big one as far as people are concerned. It is one of many big ones but it seems to be coming to the top of the pile. On numerous occasions we have heard carers ask what we would do if they were not taking care of their people. One lady...

Ceisteanna - Questions - Priority Questions: Land Reclassification (13 Dec 2012)

Ceisteanna - Questions - Priority Questions: Land Reclassification (13 Dec 2012)

Luke Flanagan: I do not often come into the House and praise the previous Government. I hope I can do likewise for this Government. The former Minister of State, Deputy Michael Finneran, stated in this House: "The ... trust does not appear to be answerable to anybody, is not elected, refuses to discuss the business of the town demesne with any local representative group". That was possibly the first time...

Ceisteanna - Questions - Priority Questions: Land Reclassification (13 Dec 2012)

Luke Flanagan: The purpose of the trust has ceased. As such, an opportunity to revoke it exists. It is hoped the Minister will do this. People in my town are united on their right to have a say in their own future and destiny. I hope the Minister will facilitate that.
