Dara Murphy: I welcome the Minister of State with special responsibility for European affairs, Deputy Paschal Donohoe. As apologies have been received from the Chairman, I am stepping into his place. Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: Forthcoming General Affairs Council: Minister of State (13 Mar 2014)

Dara Murphy: It is only that usually you do not speak, Deputy. It left me somewhat confused.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: Forthcoming General Affairs Council: Minister of State (13 Mar 2014)

Dara Murphy: I am jesting. I will finish up with some brief questions. I realise you have many questions before you, Minister of State. However, will you flesh out a little the rule of law initiative and how you see that proceeding? Reference was made, as is often the case, to working within current treaties. Will you give your assessment of the broader European view? Is there a shared position...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: Forthcoming General Affairs Council: Minister of State (13 Mar 2014)

Dara Murphy: That was not my question. I asked whether it has the necessary tools available to it rather than whether those it already possesses are sufficient. In light of what the Minister of State said, can I take it that the EU does not have the necessary tools but that it is doing as well as it can with those it possesses?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: Forthcoming General Affairs Council: Minister of State (13 Mar 2014)

Dara Murphy: The Minister might wrap up the discussion in responding to those two points.

Topical Issue Debate: Planning Issues (2 Apr 2014)

Dara Murphy: I thank the Office of the Ceann Comhairle for choosing this Topical Issue. I will reference a local example, but the underlying issue is one of national importance. Last Thursday week, 20 March 2014, planning permission which had been granted by Cork City Council for a development on the quays in the city centre of office accommodation for 2,000 workers was appealed to An Bord...

Topical Issue Debate: Planning Issues (2 Apr 2014)

Dara Murphy: I welcome the reference to priority. It is not clear, however, whether the company in question can be informed that it is being given priority as the position in this regard remains a little vague. While I do not have any issue with a timeframe for processing applications of 18 weeks and I am aware of the 80% target and the other figures cited by the Minister of State, I cannot understand...

Topical Issue Debate: Planning Issues (2 Apr 2014)

Dara Murphy: Yes.

Confidence in the Minister for Justice and Equality; and Defence: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members] (2 Apr 2014)

Dara Murphy: This morning, the Taoiseach referred to a package that the Minister, Deputy Shatter, received. It goes to show the degree to which the Opposition is now playing the man rather than the issues. Even in what we have heard today, no one felt that such a package was inappropriate or should be condemned.

Confidence in the Minister for Justice and Equality; and Defence: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members] (2 Apr 2014)

Dara Murphy: The only dispute I heard in four weeks at our parliamentary party meetings was tonight when Members expressed disappointment that they did not have an opportunity to speak today in favour of the Minister for Justice and Equality. In my experience as a Deputy, no Minister has shown the compassion and work ethic that the Minister, Deputy Shatter, has shown. We saw that nationally in how he...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform: Mortgage Arrears Resolution Process: (Resumed) Ulster Bank (8 Apr 2014)

Dara Murphy: I wish to welcome Mr. Brown and his colleagues here today. Paragraph 7 of Mr. Brown's opening statement concerns the issue of writing off or writing down mortgage debt. Some of Ulster Bank's competitors are now writing down and writing off debt. I am interested in some of the language used and have three quick questions about it. Mr. Brown said he does not write off debt. Is that just...
