Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: Accountability Report 2012: Discussion with European Movement Ireland (21 May 2013)

Terry Leyden: The member I know here is called Joe O'Reilly. As far as I know he is-----

Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: Accountability Report 2012: Discussion with European Movement Ireland (21 May 2013)

Terry Leyden: Where is the other Joseph O'Reilly?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: Accountability Report 2012: Discussion with European Movement Ireland (21 May 2013)

Terry Leyden: It is only a small detail and these things happen. In any event, I agree with the Chairman regarding the questionable nature of the documentation on attendance. While I have no problem with including members' attendance, one should go into it further and state precisely who is attending. I was interested to see the contribution regarding the Council of Europe, of which I am a member. I am...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: Accountability Report 2012: Discussion with European Movement Ireland (21 May 2013)

Terry Leyden: We are not sensitive about it because the attendance is very good.

Seanad: Order of Business (22 May 2013)

Terry Leyden: He speaks the truth.

Seanad: Order of Business (22 May 2013)

Terry Leyden: This is not the place.

Seanad: Order of Business (22 May 2013)

Terry Leyden: I would like to second Senator Diarmuid Wilson's amendment to the motion. I agree with the views of Senator Deirdre Clune on the contribution that Apple makes to the Irish economy, with more than 3,500 people employed in Cork. I think we in this Chamber should invite Apple chief executive, Tim Cook, to this House and ask the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Deputy...

Seanad: Order of Business (22 May 2013)

Terry Leyden: Yes, I am. When a member of the American Senate would try to downgrade this country in irresponsible comments, as they did yesterday, ti is very important that this House, a democratically elected House whose Members can speak for this country, should refute them. The Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, who currently holds the Presidency of the Council of the European...

Seanad: Order of Business (22 May 2013)

Terry Leyden: That is propaganda.

Seanad: Order of Business (22 May 2013)

Terry Leyden: That is correct.

Seanad: Order of Business (22 May 2013)

Terry Leyden: Fianna Fáil looked after Dundalk very well.

Seanad: Order of Business (22 May 2013)

Terry Leyden: The Minister is not in it, is he?

Seanad: Order of Business (30 May 2013)

Terry Leyden: Today is a significant day for our colleagues in county councils throughout the country. At 5 p.m. an announcement will be made on the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government website regarding new constituencies. Many of our colleagues will be in great difficulty, given the reduction in the number of seats in Roscommon from 26 to 18. Leitrim and other counties will...

Seanad: Order of Business (30 May 2013)

Terry Leyden: I appreciate that, but I want the opportunity to speak. I would be embarrassed if I were the Minister, in the HSE or investigating those organisations. It is so obvious-----

Seanad: Order of Business (30 May 2013)

Terry Leyden: We are not, but I wanted-----

Seanad: Order of Business (30 May 2013)

Terry Leyden: It seems RTE is doing the work of the Department, and did an excellent job. I agree with colleagues, however, that there are many excellent crèches throughout the country. The only way the problems identified in the RTE programme will be solved is via providing for the continuous closed circuit television monitoring of staff.

Seanad: Order of Business (30 May 2013)

Terry Leyden: CCTV monitoring is the way to go, not to be broadcast into homes on a daily basis but rather to be kept as a record. It is the only way of ensuring this type of mistreatment does not recur.

Seanad: Early Child Care Education Standards: Statements (30 May 2013)

Terry Leyden: The Minister must feel somewhat embarrassed that she is relying on "Prime Time" to find out what is happening in crèches. If I was Minister in her Department, I would be appalled by what was exposed and shocked that lack of action by the Department and the HSE and inspections allowed this to happen. There is constant exposure but very little happens - it is all talk and no action....

Seanad: Early Child Care Education Standards: Statements (30 May 2013)

Terry Leyden: Is that agreed? Agreed.
