- Control of Economic Activity (Occupied Territories) Bill 2018 [Seanad]: Second Stage [Private Members] (23 Jan 2019)
Denise Mitchell: I welcome the cross-party support and thank Senator Black for bringing this forward. This Bill aims to uphold international law. That is it. If I can, I will say the following. This Bill lays down a marker. The Irish people stand with the people of Palestine against the Israeli apartheid regime. The Irish people stand for the international rule of law. The Irish people, who have suffered...
- No Consent, No Sale Bill 2019: Second Stage [Private Members] (29 Jan 2019)
Denise Mitchell: I welcome the Bill introduced by my party colleague, Deputy Pearse Doherty. Unfortunately, in recent years it has become very clear that voluntary codes of practice for financial institutions and banks are not worth the paper they are written on. Permanent TSB has signed up to the Central Bank's code of practice for the transfer of mortgages which states that a mortgage on a home cannot be...

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: Oberstown Children Detention Campus Operational Review Report: Discussion (30 Jan 2019)
Denise Mitchell: I thank Professor Goldson and Professor Hardwick for coming in here today and for the very detailed submission that they gave us. I had many questions but many of them were answered in the submission. The failure of Oberstown Children Detention Campus to publish this review is something that I have made my displeasure known on. It is important that we have this review, we need to know what...

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: Oberstown Children Detention Campus Operational Review Report: Discussion (30 Jan 2019)
Denise Mitchell: That is the question I want to ask. We were given 95 recommendations. I will be honest that I was really concerned about some of the recommendations when I read them. I refer to recommendation No. 82 about cavity searches. I need to know in what context this recommendation was put in. Since then, the board has given us information that this does not take place and so on in the context of...

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: Oberstown Children Detention Campus Operational Review Report: Discussion (30 Jan 2019)
Denise Mitchell: I thank the professor for her presentation. The handling of this issue has been a complete and utter mess. The two professors who authored the report appeared before the committee earlier today. They submitted a significant number of references regarding the procedures through which they went. The committee was originally given four different reasons that the report was not published,...

Accountability requires the publication of the report in order that we can see why these recommendations are in place. Does Professor Kilkelly agree with that?

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: Oberstown Children Detention Campus Operational Review Report: Discussion (30 Jan 2019)
Denise Mitchell: Nobody is disputing that. We need to see this report in order to ascertain how the recommendations came about. It is simple. It is not rocket science. I want to touch on another issue. Does Professor Kilkelly believe there was a breach of contract by the authors of the report?
