- Seanad: Health and Social Care Professionals Bill 2004: Committee Stage. (17 Nov 2004)
Fergal Browne: I do not believe there is any attempt by physical therapists deliberately to mislead or to abuse any term.
- Seanad: Health and Social Care Professionals Bill 2004: Committee Stage. (17 Nov 2004)
Fergal Browne: Physical therapists also do postgraduate courses and are accepted into Trinity College and other colleges of medicine. In almost 15 years, no negligence case has been brought against a physical therapist. No one, certainly not on this side of the House, is casting aspersions on physical therapists. Were talks held with physiotherapists' representatives and was this point raised by them? Are...
- Seanad: Health and Social Care Professionals Bill 2004: Committee Stage. (17 Nov 2004)
Fergal Browne: I am willing to withdraw amendment No. 3 with a view to resubmitting it on Report Stage. I await the Minister of State's comments at that stage. I appreciate the gesture he has made.
- Seanad: Health and Social Care Professionals Bill 2004: Committee Stage. (17 Nov 2004)
Fergal Browne: Does this subsection contain a typographical error? Should it not state "the diagnosis, treatment or care of those who are injured, sick, disabled or infirmed"? I believe it should state "infirmed" as opposed to "infirm".
- Seanad: Health Services: Motion. (17 Nov 2004)
Fergal Browne: I booked tickets to see the comedian John Kenny in Carlow next week but he will find it hard to compete with that.
- Seanad: Health Services: Motion. (17 Nov 2004)
Fergal Browne: My question is whether the Hanly report is dead or alive or is it politically still in the accident and emergency unit? Every week Senator Leyden goes on and on saying it is gone. The former Minister, Deputy Michael Smith, has publicly broken ranks by stating he is against it. We had the ludicrous scenario of the former Minister for Health and Children going around parts of the country such...
- Seanad: Health Services: Motion. (17 Nov 2004)
Fergal Browne: It has nothing to do with the Minister for Health and Children but rather with the staff at St. Luke's who manage their resources excellently. There is a paediatric unit which children can attend with their parents. There is a day ward. However, there is no toilet in the ward and people must go down a corridor to access a toilet. I hope the Minister will take that on board and do something...

Fergal Browne: Why is it not mentioned in the amendment?

- Seanad: Health Services: Motion. (17 Nov 2004)
Fergal Browne: On a point of information, I was using St. Luke's as an example.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (18 Nov 2004)
Fergal Browne: I second the amendment to the Order of Business. It is time we had a debate on Aer Lingus especially since the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform, Deputy McDowell, was actively encouraging Senator Morrissey in his interview to oppose the views of the Minister for Transport, Deputy Cullen. This indicates grave divisions within the Government. Unfortunately, the consumer and the...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (18 Nov 2004)
Fergal Browne: The problem is that it has not been dealt with. We never heard from Senators Leyden or Dooley.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (18 Nov 2004)
Fergal Browne: We do not know where they stand on the Hanly report. Senator Feeney would not answer the question. We need to have a clear debate.
- Seanad: Pension Provisions: Statements (Resumed). (18 Nov 2004)
Fergal Browne: I welcome the Minister to the House. I would like to reassure Senator Leyden that the world will continue when Fine Gael gets back into power. Fine Gael has a unique role in Irish history, as witnessed in the recent documentary on Kevin O'Higgins, capturing a sad time in Irish politics. We should not forget that we are all in a privileged position today, thanks to people like Kevin O'Higgins...
- Seanad: Pension Provisions: Statements (Resumed). (18 Nov 2004)
Fergal Browne: I am pleased the Senator is back in full flight. I do not know whether he was muzzled or sin binned.
- Seanad: Pension Provisions: Statements (Resumed). (18 Nov 2004)
Fergal Browne: It is a pity he did not say that yesterday when the Minister for Health and Children was in the House. I will not even try to compete with Senator Terry who made an excellent presentation. A pension issue which arises relates to people who have been working for years and who may marry either for the first or second time after they retire. I am aware of the case of a widow who, following her...
