Seanad: Order of Business (6 Dec 2012)

Martin Conway: Last night a major security operation on the Merrion Square side of Leinster House was not because anyone was protesting against the budget but rather it was because a very distinguished guest, Hillary Clinton, was in town. The Clintons are always welcome to this country. Their work on behalf of this country will go down in history because it has been eminently positive. She is speaking in...

Seanad: Order of Business (6 Dec 2012)

Martin Conway: In 30 years time.

Seanad: Order of Business (6 Dec 2012)

Martin Conway: Correct.

Seanad: Order of Business (11 Dec 2012)

Martin Conway: I rise to speak today for two reasons. First, it was appalling to read reports over the weekend that the Revenue Commissioners are yet again using a big stick against people who find themselves in financial difficulty, this time threatening to remove mortgage interest relief for people who unfortunately find themselves in arrears with their mortgage payments. That is unacceptable,...

Seanad: Personal Insolvency Bill 2012: Report and Final Stages (11 Dec 2012)

Martin Conway: That is an utterly sensible approach. Would the director have the power to refuse to appear before the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality? Is it at his discretion or is he mandatorily required to appear before the committee? Clarity is needed to avoid a potential conflict between the committee and the director.

Seanad: Personal Insolvency Bill 2012: Report and Final Stages (11 Dec 2012)

Martin Conway: I have a supplementary question.

Martin Conway: I did not feel it was clarified.

Seanad: Order of Business (12 Dec 2012)

Martin Conway: I acknowledge and welcome the fact that this is world human rights week. Monday was the UN's day for recognising human rights. Even in a time of recession, we must reflect on whether we as a nation are doing enough to respect and implement the human rights and dignity of our citizens throughout the world. I welcome the recent announcement by the Minister for Justice and Equality that the...

Seanad: Shannon Airport: Motion (12 Dec 2012)

Martin Conway: I welcome the Minister of State to the House again. Senator Mulcahy eloquently dealt with this poorly thought out motion which, were it to come to fruition, would be very dangerous because of the consequences to which it could lead. I will not go over them but I will state the notion of history and history making is a cliche used far too often. However, in this particular instance it is...

Seanad: Shannon Airport: Motion (12 Dec 2012)

Martin Conway: I commend the Minister of State, Deputy Alan Kelly, on his tireless efforts in this regard.

Seanad: Order of Business (13 Dec 2012)

Martin Conway: I commend all the parties involved in the budgetary process and the bravery of the Deputies who supported it-----

Seanad: Order of Business (13 Dec 2012)

Martin Conway: -----in spite of its being, probably, the most difficult budget in the history of the country. No budget in the next number of years will be as difficult as this one. Great credit is due to all Deputies who stuck together and did the right thing by the country. History will judge the actions of the people who occupy the Houses of the Oireachtas at present, how they behave and how they...

Seanad: Social Welfare Bill 2012: Committee Stage (19 Dec 2012)

Martin Conway: I have listened with great interest and humility to many of the contributions and, in particular, from my good friend, since becoming a Member, Senator James Heffernan, who took a difficult decision. He is a person I greatly admire and that admiration will continue. I have also listened to contributions from the other side of the House from Members whom I admire. Unfortunately, not all...

Seanad: Social Welfare Bill 2012: Committee Stage (19 Dec 2012)

Martin Conway: There is a lack of proportionality in dealing with the respite care grant and it will have to be reformed. I will conclude as I am not going to deprive other Members of the right to speak. However, I take it personally when Members question the presence of Government Senators during debates. I challenge any Member on my attendance record, contributions and voting record in the House which...

Seanad: Social Welfare Bill 2012: Committee Stage (19 Dec 2012)

Martin Conway: The charge should be withdrawn. It is an insult to the House.

Seanad: Social Welfare Bill 2012: Committee Stage (19 Dec 2012)

Martin Conway: Finally, If the respite care grant debate is what is required to save the Seanad, we are going nowhere.
