- Seanad: Order of Business (3 Jul 2013)
Catherine Noone: I am getting to it. Another noteworthy point concerns a Fáilte Ireland initiative involving a celebrity Chinese couple. This may sound frivolous, but it is interesting and important. The couple spent their honeymoon in Ireland last November and generated approximately €500,000 worth of publicity in China, for the meagre investment of €8,000, because they blogged and...
- Seanad: Food Provenance Bill 2013: Second Stage (3 Jul 2013)
Catherine Noone: I welcome the Minister of State and congratulate him on his appointment which, as previous speakers remarked, is well-deserved. We look forward to welcoming him in this House many times, at least as long as we are here. I commend Senator Quinn for his hard work in bringing this sensible Bill to the House. It is a bid to provide an enhanced level of information regarding food, whether fresh...
- Seanad: Food Provenance Bill 2013: Second Stage (3 Jul 2013)
Catherine Noone: I did not realise I was over time. I commend Senator Quinn for his very hard work and for producing a fine Bill which, in so far as it is possible, the Minister of State should use and bring to Europe, allowing us to lead the charge in food labelling. If there must be a harmonised approach within Europe, as I believe is the case with food provenance, we should be the ones to lead.
- Seanad: Order of Business (4 Jul 2013)
Catherine Noone: I concur with Senator O'Keeffe regarding the issue of childhood obesity. I commend Senator Quinn on the Food Provenance Bill 2013. I am afraid that labelling is only one aspect of this issue. It goes much deeper than that and I join Senator O'Keeffe in calling for a debate on obesity generally as while it affects children, it also affects adults in a major way with significant costs being...

Catherine Noone: We know that.

Catherine Noone: It is obvious that the Senator never ran on the panels from which we were elected.

Catherine Noone: Senator Crown interrupts me now and again.

Catherine Noone: If he is not dead at that stage.

Catherine Noone: In fairness, at least the Senator made reference to the amendment.

Catherine Noone: There are no amendment to this section.
- Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (15 Jul 2013)
Catherine Noone: I join with colleagues on their comments on today’s press release on the abolition of the Seanad from the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Deputy Bruton. The House has well discussed the cheap shot that it is to cut off one third of the Oireachtas and call it political reform. My views on this are well documented. I also join with other speakers in agreeing this press...
- Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (15 Jul 2013)
Catherine Noone: -----in that it puts across a simple message to the people that if they abolish the Seanad they will save money but if they do not, then disabled people will not get extra funding.
- Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (15 Jul 2013)
Catherine Noone: Yes, I will come to my question for the Leader. We need to come up with a simple message on the other side of the camp.
- Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (15 Jul 2013)
Catherine Noone: The Minister for Finance has been requested to attend the House before the budget. The VAT system could be usefully debated in the House during these budget discussions. There are various innovative ways the VAT system can be used to create movement in a certain sector of the economy, like we saw with the 9% rate on tourism products and services. It can also be used for promoting healthy...
- Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (15 Jul 2013)
Catherine Noone: I am way over time because I was interrupted.
- Seanad: Order of Business (16 Jul 2013)
Catherine Noone: I agree with Senator Clune's comments on data protection and privacy, following the Snowden controversy and Angela Merkel's recent call for an agreement on EU data protection rules. This comes at an interesting time. As it stands, Ireland and Britain are perceived as the EU's weak link when it comes to privacy. If a German Facebook user is to be guided by any law, it will be German law,...
- Seanad: Protection of Life During Pregnancy Bill 2013: Second Stage (Resumed) (16 Jul 2013)
Catherine Noone: I welcome the Minister of State, Deputy Alex White, for the debate on this extremely important legislation. Like many colleagues, this is an issue I have struggled with and agonised over in recent months. I wish to make it clear that I will be voting with my conscience on this issue. Given the intense level of scrutiny to which these provisions have been subject and the huge volume of...
- Seanad: Order of Business (17 Jul 2013)
Catherine Noone: I support Senator O'Brien and others on the banking issue. I was in the company of a banker yesterday evening who was speaking about the property market generally and who said that, as of September, there would be many more signs going up. This is something that bankers are very much embracing, which is regrettable. In arguing about the threat of suicide, we must be careful that we do not...
- Seanad: Order of Business (19 Jul 2013)
Catherine Noone: I would like to join other speakers who spoke on the proposals to introduce on-the-spot fines for cyclists who flout traffic laws. As Senator Jim D'Arcy said, an on-the-spot fine of €50 will be issued in three circumstances: where cyclists cycle on the footpath, break a red light or partake in dangerous overtaking. The introduction of such a fine is long overdue. We have given...
- Seanad: Order of Business (19 Jul 2013)
Catherine Noone: -----because we lead by example when it comes to cycling and such matters. Cycling is regularly done at weekends, when most people are free of ordinary work. With more and more cyclists choosing to commute, which is a great development and something I would like to see more of, these laws are necessary and will ensure that cyclists are safer. I would like the funds that will be collected...
