Gerry Horkan: The witnesses will have to respond within the Senator's time as well.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Transport Strategy for the Greater Dublin Region: Discussion (4 May 2022)

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Transport Strategy for the Greater Dublin Region: Discussion (4 May 2022)

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Transport Strategy for the Greater Dublin Region: Discussion (4 May 2022)

Gerry Horkan: Indeed.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Transport Strategy for the Greater Dublin Region: Discussion (4 May 2022)

Gerry Horkan: I thank Senator Buttimer. Other members want to come back from the Dáil, and I have a couple more points to make - I will also allow other members in - as the only Dublin member on the committee who is actually here. I wish to turn to the safety aspect of public transport, but first it is very important for us all to acknowledge the work that has been done on greenways and cycling....

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Transport Strategy for the Greater Dublin Region: Discussion (4 May 2022)

Gerry Horkan: I will try to be as brief as possible, despite being the only Dublin member of the committee.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Transport Strategy for the Greater Dublin Region: Discussion (4 May 2022)

Gerry Horkan: I accept that, but I will nonetheless try to be brief. As the only member of the committee who lives in Dublin, this topic is close to my heart. I acknowledge the greater Dublin area is larger than just the county, but these issues certainly affect Dublin people disproportionately.

Gerry Horkan: We will discuss all that next week. I thank Dublin Bus, that is, not just Mr. Coyne but all his 3,600 staff members, who do so much. It is only the problems that we hear about and it is only when something goes wrong that I end up calling him or one of his team. When things are going well, which is 99.9% of the time, we take the service for granted. It is only when a bus goes missing on...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Transport Strategy for the Greater Dublin Region: Discussion (4 May 2022)

Gerry Horkan: What about on the buses as opposed to directed at the buses? Is the number small?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Transport Strategy for the Greater Dublin Region: Discussion (4 May 2022)

Gerry Horkan: It is important that we articulate that point. The prospect of antisocial behaviour puts people off taking the bus or stops them from re-engaging with it.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Transport Strategy for the Greater Dublin Region: Discussion (4 May 2022)

Gerry Horkan: Will it take into account the €2, the €2.30 and other discounts, the fare cap per day and per week, and so on?

Gerry Horkan: Is that four or five years away?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Transport Strategy for the Greater Dublin Region: Discussion (4 May 2022)

Gerry Horkan: Would that save Dublin Bus significant costs in terms of security and other costs related to handling cash?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Transport Strategy for the Greater Dublin Region: Discussion (4 May 2022)

Gerry Horkan: It is going that way naturally anyway.
