Bríd Smith: Can one sell something for no money?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: New National Maternity Hospital: Discussion (Resumed) (16 May 2022)

Bríd Smith: Did the group give them a euro?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: New National Maternity Hospital: Discussion (Resumed) (16 May 2022)

Bríd Smith: How does one sell something and not get money, or something else be it even a dozen eggs, for it?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: New National Maternity Hospital: Discussion (Resumed) (16 May 2022)

Bríd Smith: Mr. O'Raghallaigh cannot remember the nominality of it?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: New National Maternity Hospital: Discussion (Resumed) (16 May 2022)

Bríd Smith: They are now gone out of the picture. Now we have an evolution from religious to nothing. People have sent me photographs in the past hour of crucifixes, mass stands and different items around the hospital. I will again ask Mr. Menton when does the group hope to have all iconography removed from the hospital now that it has evolved into a secular hospital?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: New National Maternity Hospital: Discussion (Resumed) (16 May 2022)

Bríd Smith: That does not answer my question. That is my second time to ask it. When I ask when that will happen, Mr. Menton could say it would be a month, two months, ten months or ten years. He could answer me that way.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: New National Maternity Hospital: Discussion (Resumed) (16 May 2022)

Bríd Smith: Grand. In the next two to three months Mr. Menton hopes to have all that religious stuff moved.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: New National Maternity Hospital: Discussion (Resumed) (16 May 2022)

Bríd Smith: Grand. There was a discussion earlier, and I cannot remember who asked the question, as to whether a member of the board would ever approach a clinician about his or her decision and the response was categorically, no, that would not happen. Could Mr. Menton envisage a situation where a clinician would approach the board about its decision given the very limited laws we have around...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: New National Maternity Hospital: Discussion (Resumed) (16 May 2022)

Bríd Smith: Does that medical ethics committee have any of the ethics of the original Mother Mary Aikenhead group?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: New National Maternity Hospital: Discussion (Resumed) (16 May 2022)

Bríd Smith: Could Dr. Holian send that medical ethics constitution to Members of the Oireachtas?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: New National Maternity Hospital: Discussion (Resumed) (16 May 2022)

Bríd Smith: That would be gratefully received. All the information the witnesses are giving us is very interesting but at some point we need to put pressure on the Government to give us more time to deal with the rest of this stuff. There is a lot of stuff outstanding and a lot of stuff emerging that is causing concern.

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Inquiry into the Death of Mr. Shane O'Farrell (24 May 2022)

Bríd Smith: 6. To ask the Tánaiste and Minister for Justice and Equality the timeframe for finalising a scoping report into the death of a person (details supplied); if progress has been made; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [26134/22]

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Inquiry into the Death of Mr. Shane O'Farrell (24 May 2022)

Bríd Smith: My question to the Minister is about the scoping report into the death of Shane O'Farrell that was insisted upon by the previous Minister, Deputy Flanagan, over two years ago. It is almost 11 years since Shane O'Farrell was killed in his home town of Monaghan. There has been a litany of failures by the State in delivering justice for the O'Farrell family. This delay is compounding that...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Inquiry into the Death of Mr. Shane O'Farrell (24 May 2022)

Bríd Smith: I acknowledge that the Minister's answer is progress from the previous answers we have received. Being on the verge of completion is not an answer as to a timeframe. It then has to go to the Attorney General for his view and that will be sought before there is any publication of the scoping report. I remind people generally in the public that this scoping exercise was sought as part of...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Inquiry into the Death of Mr. Shane O'Farrell (24 May 2022)

Bríd Smith: I have to accept the Minister's bona fides in this matter, as I have said. However, it is almost 11 years since the terrible killing of this young man. It should never have happened, as we all know. Had justice been applied as it should have been, the killer would have been in custody instead of being loose on the roads and able to carry out a hit-and-run killing. Many questions need to...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: An Garda Síochána (24 May 2022)

Bríd Smith: 15. To ask the Tánaiste and Minister for Justice and Equality the details of proposals by the Government to reform GSOC; the accountability or oversight by Dáil Éireann or by another body that the current structure allows for; the mechanism that is available to revisit previous commission investigations that may have failed to discover facts or wrongdoing; and if she will make...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: An Garda Síochána (24 May 2022)

Bríd Smith: My question relates to the final point the Minister made in respect of the previous question, namely, GSOC and the role it plays. Could she give details on the plan to reform GSOC, the accountability or oversight by Dáil Éireann or another body that the current structure allows for and the mechanism available to revisit GSOC investigations that may have failed to discover facts or...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: An Garda Síochána (24 May 2022)

Bríd Smith: Will we have the ability to look back at cases that clearly failed?
