Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Courts and Courthouses: Discussion (28 Sep 2021)

Patrick Costello: No, but I may have to leave to attend a meeting of the Joint Committee on Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Courts and Courthouses: Discussion (28 Sep 2021)

Patrick Costello: I will pick up on Ms Denning's comment that the aim of the courts is to treat everyone equally. While that is an understandable goal, and I understand where Ms Denning is coming from, it needs to be acknowledged that not everyone's needs are equal. To treat everyone equally risks excluding certain groups which may have extra needs. I appreciate that was not Ms Denning's intention but it...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Courts and Courthouses: Discussion (28 Sep 2021)

Patrick Costello: I will chase up the OPW about its skills and experience. On the family courts, Pavee Point produced excellent leaflets for people who are non-literate in relation to barring orders, protection orders and domestic violence. As well as plain English, the Courts Service needs to consider people who are non-literate. I ask the NDA to give a brief input on that. I have a couple more questions.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Courts and Courthouses: Discussion (28 Sep 2021)

Patrick Costello: I am conscious of the description of Covid as a massive experiment. This applies to many areas, not just the Courts Service. I am curious about the results of the experiment. My question is for both representatives from the Bar Council. I would like to hear their experiences of the impact of the changes under Covid and of virtual hearings on the administration of justice. I would like to...

The National Youth Justice Strategy 2021-2027 and Supporting Community Safety: Statements (6 Oct 2021)

Patrick Costello: Like many areas of youth work and many areas in general, the Garda youth diversion projects have been under significant strain in the past 18 months or so as a result of Covid. This has allowed many of these projects to reach out and find new ways of working. Much of this outreach was effective in reaching out to young people who might not have been involved previously in the centre-based...

Recovery of Tourism and Aviation: Statements (7 Oct 2021)

Patrick Costello: I agree with many of the comments made by Deputy Verona Murphy. Having spent a week in Fethard-on-Sea a few years back, I concur that it is definitely an excellent holiday destination. I also agree that we should not be wasting money on tourism but should be spending it carefully and in the right way. There are many opportunities to pick the low-hanging fruit in order to significantly...

Joint Committee On Children, Equality, Disability, Integration And Youth: Regulation and Funding Issues Facing Workers in the Early Years Sector: Discussion (5 Oct 2021)

Patrick Costello: I thank SIPTU for coming in today. I will be honest; the presentation has been quite comprehensive. SIPTU has been engaging with all of us on this issue for quite some time. I do not really have any questions. As Deputy Murnane O'Connor said, the fact that SIPTU has been engaging with us for quite some time and nothing has changed is reflective of the need for change. I will share my...

Joint Committee On Children, Equality, Disability, Integration And Youth: Regulation and Funding Issues Facing Workers in the Early Years Sector: Discussion (5 Oct 2021)

Patrick Costello: I thank the witnesses for their attendance. It is very important that two different parts of the country are represented at this meeting and both are reporting very similar issues. No doubt, if we were to look wider, we would find many more young children throughout the country who are affected. The figure that was mentioned was 5,000, but behind that are all the families who will be...
