Written Answers — Airport Development Projects: Airport Development Projects (20 Feb 2007)

Martin Cullen: I propose to take Questions Nos. 445 and 446 together. Under the Dublin Airport Authority's (DAA) Capital Investment Programme, Terminal Two and associated pier facilities (Pier E) will be provided close to the existing terminal. Fingal County Council granted planning permission for the project in October 2006 and this is now under appeal to An Bord Pleanála. I am assured that the DAA is...

Written Answers — Traffic Management: Traffic Management (20 Feb 2007)

Martin Cullen: As I stated in reply to Question No. 12 of 2 November 2006, the range of offences in the Local Authorities (Traffic Wardens) Act 1975 which may be enforced by local authority traffic wardens was expanded by statutory amendments made in 2002 and 2006. Three specified offences, one of which relates to display of an NCT disc and two which relate to motor tax disc offences, have not yet been...

Written Answers — Decentralisation Programme: Decentralisation Programme (20 Feb 2007)

Martin Cullen: To date 18 officers have transferred out of my Department under the decentralisation programme. None of these staff had a previous transfer within a two year period of the decentralisation transfer and none transferred from a non-Dublin office to a Dublin office in the initial transfer. The matter of staff being held in Dublin pending their move to decentralised locations is a matter for...

Leaders' Questions (21 Feb 2007)

Martin Cullen: Deputy Rabbitte is only a three card trick man.

Leaders' Questions (21 Feb 2007)

Public Transport. (21 Feb 2007)

Martin Cullen: Transport 21 provides for a programme of investment to fund increased radial and orbital bus services in the Dublin area. The target is to achieve in the period up to 2015 a 60% increase in passenger carrying capacity through new and replacement bus acquisition. Dublin Bus is bringing into service the 100 additional buses for which Exchequer funding of €30 million was approved in...

Public Transport. (21 Feb 2007)

Martin Cullen: I do not agree that traffic conditions are worsening on a daily basis. As Deputy Mitchell knows, since the port tunnel opened, traffic in and around the centre of Dublin and on the north side of the city has improved. I was pleased to hear from Dublin Bus that the speed ratio on its routes from the north side to the centre of the city had increased.

Public Transport. (21 Feb 2007)

Martin Cullen: It is providing a much better service for the public.

Public Transport. (21 Feb 2007)

Martin Cullen: The naysayers and doomsayers stated the M50 would close down when the port tunnel opened. Equally, this has proven not to be the case. I accept there are transport issues which must be dealt with and I am happy to state we are dealing with them. I saw the Dublin Bus plans for the new buses to be provided which are being maximised on green routes from suburbs to the centre of Dublin. The...

Public Transport. (21 Feb 2007)

Martin Cullen: I apologise.

Public Transport. (21 Feb 2007)

Martin Cullen: I am happy to answer the question. I apologise; I should have answered it. The legislation is ready and I intend to publish it within the coming weeks. The new chairman designate has been appointed. He was also made chairman of the RPA which is part of the transition process in establishing the Dublin transportation authority. I do not know where the Deputy Mitchell gets the idea that the...

Public Transport. (21 Feb 2007)

Martin Cullen: I will deal with this matter later when I reply to another parliamentary question dealing with the Road Transport Act which is being reformed. The Dublin transport authority will also have overall responsibility for traffic management in Dublin.

Public Transport. (21 Feb 2007)

Martin Cullen: That is not true and the Deputy knows it.

Rail Services. (21 Feb 2007)

Martin Cullen: Iarnród Éireann continues to pursue a policy of growing its rail freight business where opportunities present, such as in bulk and trainload traffic. The company has also sought to return the rail freight business to profitability. To help achieve this turnaround, Iarnród Éireann withdrew from loss-making groupage, palletised and single container rail transport resulting in the deficit...

Rail Services. (21 Feb 2007)

Martin Cullen: To correct the Deputy, I stated that Iarnród Éireann continues to pursue a policy of growing its rail freight business where opportunities present, such as in bulk and trainload traffic.

Rail Services. (21 Feb 2007)

Martin Cullen: It is interesting for the Labour Party to adopt a position where it suggests the taxpayer should fund highly profitable commercial sector companies to move their goods and services around the country. This is an extraordinary position. The taxpayer has enough to fund in this country.
