- Seanad: Order of Business (12 Feb 2013)
Terry Leyden: I wish to support the suggestion that the report by the former Senator, Martin McAleese, into the Magdalen laundries be debated in this House as soon as possible. I greatly regret that the former Senator has resigned from this House. Unfortunately, I was absent last week, being at a meeting of the European pro-dialogue group on the Malvinas Islands while Members were debating an extremely...
- Seanad: Order of Business (12 Feb 2013)
Terry Leyden: I was engaged in that last week. However, I wish the former Senator McAleese the best. I presume Members already have sent best wishes to him in my absence. He resides in County Roscommon with his wife, Mary, and is a loss to the county as a Senator. Will the Taoiseach decide to fill the vacancy or await the outcome of the referendum in October for so doing?
- Seanad: Order of Business (12 Feb 2013)
Terry Leyden: Of course it is, and I am sure the Cathaoirleach has no influence whatsoever in that regard.
- Seanad: Order of Business (12 Feb 2013)
Terry Leyden: I wish to support Senator Coghlan's proposal that Members send best wishes to Pope Benedict XVI on his decision to stand down as Bishop of Rome and Head of the Vatican State. It is a great decision for him in the sense he is 85 years of age. However, it is very historic from Members' perspective, as this is the first Seanad of which I have been a Member when a Pope has actually resigned....
- Seanad: Order of Business (12 Feb 2013)
Terry Leyden: We should not trivialise this important event. There are 1.2 billion Catholics in the world. One sixth of the entire population is Catholic and the role of Pope is an important one. Ageism does not apply in the Vatican, which is refreshing. Furthermore-----

- Seanad: Order of Business (12 Feb 2013)
Terry Leyden: When the new Pope is elected I suggest to the Government that we would re-open our embassy in the Vatican as a gesture of solidarity.
- Seanad: Order of Business (13 Feb 2013)
Terry Leyden: I second the amendment to the Order of Business proposed by Senator MacSharry. Last night, in his first State of the Union address of his second term, President Obama stated the following to a joint session of Congress: "We will launch talks on a comprehensive Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership with the European Union ? because trade that is free and fair across the Atlantic...
- Seanad: Address to Seanad Éireann by Ms Phil Prendergast, MEP. (13 Feb 2013)
Terry Leyden: First, I welcome Ms Prendergast back to the House. It is great to have her back in the House. She played an important role here and was an active Member. I admire the fact that, as a trained midwife, she was extraordinarily kind to one of our Members, former Senator Lisa McDonald from Wexford, who at the time had difficulty getting pairs. It was not our Chief Whip who caused problems, but...
- Seanad: Address to Seanad Éireann by Ms Phil Prendergast, MEP. (13 Feb 2013)
Terry Leyden: -----when I was appointed by the late Taoiseach, Mr. Charles J. Haughey, at my request, to the Department of Industry and Commerce with responsibility for trade and marketing, with then Minister, Mr. Des O'Malley, I was delegated full responsibility for international trade and the negotiations of the Single European Act. That may not be known to Ms Prendergast but it is a fact. At the time,...
