- An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (12 Dec 2023)
Verona Murphy: Yesterday there was a mini tornado in Leitrim. Many of the people in Wexford watched with interest as the Taoiseach proclaimed he would bring a memo or a proposal to Cabinet that would see relief and support for the people of Leitrim. Thirteen months ago I sent the Taoiseach videos from Wexford of the mini tornado we had, which happened during the Hallowe'en recess. The scenes were that of...

Verona Murphy: 42. To ask the Tánaiste and Minister for Justice and Equality if she acknowledges the current retention crisis facing An Garda Síochána; what measures her Department is taking to address same; what recommendations her Department has made to An Garda Síochána to increase recruitment to the Garda force; and if she will make a statement on the matter. - Ceisteanna ar Sonraíodh Uain Dóibh - Priority Questions: An Garda Síochána (12 Dec 2023)
Verona Murphy: I ask the Minister to acknowledge the current retention crisis facing An Garda Síochána and to outline the measures her Department is taking to address same. What recommendations has the Department made to An Garda Síochána to increase recruitment to the force? What I am really asking is that the Minister acknowledge the current retention crisis facing An Garda...
- Ceisteanna ar Sonraíodh Uain Dóibh - Priority Questions: An Garda Síochána (12 Dec 2023)
Verona Murphy: We all know there is a huge recruitment crisis. There have been many promises and budgetary commitments but, as the Minister said, budget is clearly not the issue. We have to look at what the issue is and why we cannot meet targets, or recruit to cover the capacity of those who are leaving, out sick or on suspension. We are in a bad way. We are in crisis and that crisis needs to come to a...
- Ceisteanna ar Sonraíodh Uain Dóibh - Priority Questions: An Garda Síochána (12 Dec 2023)
Verona Murphy: There is also a huge issue with retention and the major loss when members of An Garda Síochána decide they need to leave the force. I sincerely hope that we are doing exit interviews and that we take the information as feedback and do something with it. All of their knowledge, training and expertise goes with them and it takes years to gain that experience as a new recruit. I...

Verona Murphy: The Constitution currently recognises only the marital family as the family. This referendum is intended to recognise and give constitutional status and protection to families beyond the marital family, including cohabiting couples and one-parent families. The special and unique status of marriage in the Constitution will not be altered by this. In order to do this, the Government proposes...

Chapter 11 - Utilisation of the Land Aggregation Scheme Sites (14 Dec 2023) Verona Murphy: I welcome the witnesses back to the committee. I want to follow on from what Deputy Ó Cathasaigh asked Mr. Doyle. Mr. Doyle made a comment on the scale and breadth of his Department, of which housing is such a big part. Is he overwhelmed? Is the Department too big?

Chapter 11 - Utilisation of the Land Aggregation Scheme Sites (14 Dec 2023) Verona Murphy: Mr. Jordan stated, regarding the land aggregation, that some of the sites were not suitable and that the Housing Agency had offered them as Ukrainian accommodation sites. Is that correct? Why would the sites be suitable for accommodating Ukrainians if they were not suitable for accommodating Irish people?

Chapter 11 - Utilisation of the Land Aggregation Scheme Sites (14 Dec 2023) Verona Murphy: According to a report that came out yesterday, more than 100,000 Ukrainians have been taken in and 16,000 Ukrainians are in jobs. If it is not a place where an Irish person can live and avail of services, would it not be fair to say that it is an impediment to someone who comes here as refugee finding a job if the services are not available? We are not doing ourselves any favours.
