Ned O'Sullivan: Without interruption, I hope. I keep getting interrupted-----

Seanad: Order of Business (22 Jul 2013)

Ned O'Sullivan: -----by the not-so-Independent, quasi-Fine Gael group. The Leader should ask the Taoiseach to explain himself to the Seanad.

Seanad: Order of Business (22 Jul 2013)

Ned O'Sullivan: Independent Fine Gael.

Seanad: Order of Business (22 Jul 2013)

Ned O'Sullivan: I am happy to answer the Leader. Every schoolboy knows the expression.

Seanad: Order of Business (22 Jul 2013)

Ned O'Sullivan: If one's hand is in the till, it means one has been caught red-handed doing something.

Seanad: Order of Business (22 Jul 2013)

Ned O'Sullivan: I have not been called that since I was an altar boy.

Seanad: Order of Business (23 Jul 2013)

Ned O'Sullivan: Was it around then?

Seanad: Order of Business (23 Jul 2013)

Ned O'Sullivan: I congratulate Senator Norris on another sterling performance on the "Today with Pat Kenny" show on RTE Radio 1 this morning. I am sure many of the Members heard it. I have no doubt that if that man gets enough access to the airwaves, I would be very sanguine about the outcome of any referendum on the abolition of the Seanad.

Seanad: Order of Business (23 Jul 2013)

Ned O'Sullivan: I would not hold my breath waiting for the Taoiseach, or the Führer, Enda Kenny, to take him up on his offer of a debate. I think that is highly unlikely. On a more serious matter and referring to what Senator Coghlan said, I do not think we can pass too lightly over the allegations made about bribery in the Chamber. It is too serious a matter for that. In my Second Stage speech-----

Seanad: Order of Business (23 Jul 2013)

Ned O'Sullivan: -----I referred to Grattan's Parliament and what the old Gaelic writers said about it at the time was mealladh breabadh agus bagairt, which means persuasion, bribery and threats. That is how that Parliament was suppressed.

Seanad: Order of Business (23 Jul 2013)

Ned O'Sullivan: At the time I made a point to making sure that I was not making any allegation of bribery. I said certainly there were threats and we know that and a lot of persuasion was going on but I am not so sure about the bribery aspect now. However, I am not so sure about the bribery aspect now. We must examine this, even if we are in the dying days of the session. The idea that anyone's vote or...

Seanad: An Bille um Dara Leasú is Tríocha ar an mBunreacht (Deireadh a chur le Seanad Éireann) 2013: An Cúigiú Céim - Thirty-second Amendment of the Constitution (Abolition of Seanad Éireann) Bill 2013: Fifth Stage (23 Jul 2013)

Ned O'Sullivan: Shocking.

Ned O'Sullivan: He was not in the mood.

Seanad: SI 325 of 2012 - European Union (Quality and Safety of Human Organs Intended for Transplantation) Regulations 2012: Motion (20 Aug 2013)

Ned O'Sullivan: This is a serious subject and not suitable for joking, but as Charlie Chaplin once said, a day without a laugh is a day lost. The pre-war comedian, W. C. Fields had a lifelong grudge against a certain city in America. As he was approaching death, he was asked what was to be put on his tombstone and he said they should write on it: "All in all, I think I would rather be in Philadelphia." As...

Seanad: Order of Business (24 Sep 2013)

Ned O'Sullivan: Enda Kenny, perhaps.

Seanad: Order of Business (24 Sep 2013)

Ned O'Sullivan: I join the Leader and my County Kerry colleague, Senator Paul Coghlan, in expressing my deepest sympathy to Veda and the rest of the Blennerhassett family on the death of John. He was a good friend of mine, even though we were politically apart. He offered great encouragement to young councillors and was forthcoming with advice. He was highly respected. He came from an historic family...

Seanad: Address to Seanad Éireann by Mr. David Begg (25 Sep 2013)

Ned O'Sullivan: It is a great pleasure to welcome David Begg on behalf of the Fianna Fáil group. I compliment you, a Chathaoirligh, and the Leader for not only facilitating this outstanding presentation from Mr. Begg, but facilitating presentations from other leaders from business and other walks of life over the past six months. Mr. Begg has had a long and outstanding career in public life. He is...

Seanad: Order of Business (1 Oct 2013)

Ned O'Sullivan: I am very shocked at the reports of statements allegedly made by our former colleague in the Seanad and current Minister of State at the Department of Education and Skills, Deputy Ciarán Cannon. He appears to be referring to senior Fianna Fáil people. I was in my first term in the Seanad when he was a Member of this House, so obviously he is not referring to me, but it is a slur...

Seanad: Order of Business (1 Oct 2013)

Ned O'Sullivan: I have. It is all very disappointing. During a famous Triple Crown match when Ireland was under pressure the then captain, Ciaran Fitzgerald, was famously seen on screen shouting at his players, "Where is your ... pride?" He used an adjective that I cannot use here. However, I say to the Members opposite, all of whom I greatly respect, and particularly to the Fine Gael Members, where is...
