- Seanad: Child Care Facilities. (18 May 2005)
Paschal Mooney: I thank the Minister of State on behalf of our colleague, the Minister of State, Deputy Brian Lenihan, and for his kind remarks about my modest contribution in this area.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (19 May 2005)
Paschal Mooney: I am pleased that my colleague, Senator Ross, alluded to yesterday's debate. This was the main reason I indicated to speak. The Leader and the Committee on Procedure and Privileges are to be applauded for facilitating the Seanad in embarking on a new and challenging route in establishing a dialogue with Members of the European Parliament. However, with the exception of The Irish Times, there...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (19 May 2005)
Paschal Mooney: An entire day was set aside for this debate on the EU constitutional treaty. Anyone who reads even part of that debate will have a better understanding of the treaty's provisions. Senator McHugh referred to his constituents' lack of awareness of the role of Seanad. The same is probably true throughout the State. It is unacceptable and it is past time something was done about it.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (19 May 2005)
Paschal Mooney: RTE did not refer to any Senator.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (24 May 2005)
Paschal Mooney: No, it is not.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (1 Jun 2005)
Paschal Mooney: Will the Leader consider a proposal that the House would formally acknowledge in some way the 60th birthday of Aung San Suu Kyi who has been incarcerated for the past 15 years? What prompted me to raise this matter is the intention of Galway City Council to confer the freedom of the city of Galway on Aung San Suu Kyi following the example of Dublin some years ago. I understand a relative of...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (1 Jun 2005)
Paschal Mooney: This House is an ideal vehicle to do that. I would be grateful if the Leader might, in the context of the Committee on Procedure and Privileges, initiate some process to acknowledge the occasion of Aung San Suu Kyi's birthday to give maximum effect to the publicity that hopefully would surround it. In the same vein, this House rightly condemned the imprisonment of a frontline defender who was...
- Seanad: Disability Bill 2004: Second Stage (Resumed). (1 Jun 2005)
Paschal Mooney: If I were not involved in politics but active exclusively in the area of disability as the parent of a child with special needs, which I am, I would have great difficulty supporting this Bill in its current form. However, I understand the difficulty in which the Government has found itself in recent years. I record my appreciation, and that of others in a position similar to my own who may...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (2 Jun 2005)
Paschal Mooney: I join with colleagues in asking the Leader to provide time to debate the Morris report. I know the McBrearty family. I know the father, Frank, through my showbusiness connections because the family ran a very successful cabaret venue. I have spoken to him and the family are very angry. I hope that in the context of this debate there is some move towards compensating the McBrearty family in...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (2 Jun 2005)
Paschal Mooney: I ask for the Leader's support on this matter. They should initiate proceedings with RTE, the national broadcaster, to broadcast the proceedings of the National Forum on Europe as a package. It has already been televised internally and therefore would not be costly. There would be no technical obstacles to overcome and I believe it would contribute to the debate. My final point is-ââ
- Seanad: Order of Business. (2 Jun 2005)
Paschal Mooney: Why should Ireland as a sovereign State take its cue from the decision of another state? We are entitled in this State to have a debate and to come to our own conclusions about the EU treaty.
- Seanad: Death of Former Member: Expressions of Sympathy. (14 Jun 2005)
Paschal Mooney: I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute. Although mentioned by Senator Brian Hayes, it is probably not widely known that the Doherty family is originally from my home town, Drumshanbo, County Leitrim. Cootehall is only five miles away. All that separates us is the River Shannon and the parishes are almost on top of each other. All Seán's aunts, uncles and cousins still live there....
- Seanad: Disability Bill 2004: Committee Stage. (14 Jun 2005)
Paschal Mooney: Amendments Nos. 21 to 23, inclusive, in the name of Senator Tuffy, are out of order as they involve potential charges on the Revenue. Amendments Nos. 24 and 39 are related and may be discussed together by agreement.
- Seanad: Disability Bill 2004: Committee Stage. (14 Jun 2005)
Paschal Mooney: Amendments Nos. 26, 27 and 28 are related and may be discussed together by agreement.
- Seanad: Business of Seanad. (14 Jun 2005)
Paschal Mooney: Is that agreed? Perhaps the House should dispose of this group of amendments before it reports progress.
- Seanad: Business of Seanad. (14 Jun 2005)
Paschal Mooney: We can conclude after we have disposed of amendments Nos. 26 to 28, inclusive.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (15 Jun 2005)
Paschal Mooney: I support the calls for a debate on child care but I cannot let Senator O'Meara's comments go unanswered. This Government has been wide awake to the realities of child care and has spent hundreds of millions of euro since the programme was initiated in 1997. My friend and colleague, Senator Cox, raised the issue repeatedly at Fianna Fáil parliamentary party meetings when she was first...
- Seanad: Morris Tribunal Reports: Motion. (15 Jun 2005)
Paschal Mooney: The Senator should conclude. She is well over her time.
- Seanad: Morris Tribunal Reports: Motion. (15 Jun 2005)
Paschal Mooney: By agreement, Senator Cummins has allowed Senator Maurice Hayes to use his slot. Is that agreed? Agreed.
- Seanad: Morris Tribunal Reports: Motion. (15 Jun 2005)
Paschal Mooney: I do not control that matter.
