Seanad: Unemployment: Motion (1 Jul 2009)

Dominic Hannigan: Will the Senator give way? I have not tried to get in and I regret that I was not here earlier, but I would like to make a contribution.

Seanad: Unemployment: Motion (1 Jul 2009)

Dominic Hannigan: Unfortunately, we cannot be in two places at once.

Seanad: Order of Business (2 Jul 2009)

Dominic Hannigan: I agree with Senator Mullen that yesterday's debate was an excellent example of how the Seanad can add value but we all recognise that it was the exception rather than the rule. It was a clear example of legislation brought before the House that had not been fully thought out. We are glad to see the reversal of the imposition of a charge on mobile homes, but anybody who was in the House...

Seanad: Order of Business (2 Jul 2009)

Dominic Hannigan: The UK Foreign Secretary arrived here yesterday on a scheduled BMI flight. The lesson I learnt from that visit is that one of the most important politicians in the United Kingdom will take a scheduled flight. Unfortunately, the lesson our Ministers will learn from that is that if one takes a scheduled flight one might lose one's jacket so one is better off using a Government jet.

Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (7 Jul 2009)

Dominic Hannigan: I join other Senators in expressing my delight that we can expect the return of Nobel Peace Prize winner Mairéad Maguire this evening. She is not the only winner of the Nobel Peace Prize to have been held in captivity. Aung San Suu Kyi entered her 5,000th day in captivity last Sunday. United Nations Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, who will be in the House later, expressed his...

Seanad: Order of Business (8 Jul 2009)

Dominic Hannigan: We were lucky yesterday to have the presence of the United Nations Secretary General, Mr. Ban Ki-moon, in the House. The Chairman of the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs was able to offer him a céad míle fáilte. However, that was not the case last Friday, when three young Texan backpackers were sent packing at Dublin Airport. They were refused entry because they could not...

Seanad: Telecommunications Services: Motion (8 Jul 2009)

Dominic Hannigan: I move: That Seanad Éireann: - recognising the importance of rural Ireland to the social fabric of the nation; - recognising the level of isolation felt by many residents in rural Ireland; - recognising the benefits in social communication brought about by Broadband access; and - recognising the importance of broadband availability for the setting up and running of rural based businesses,...

Dominic Hannigan: There must be more.

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Jul 2009)

Dominic Hannigan: Today the G8 countries are meeting in L'Aquila in Italy. Last week Archbishop Tutu and former President Mary Robinson wrote to the leaders asking them to set up a global fund for education. At the weekend the Pope also wrote to them, speaking about education and calling it an indispensable condition for the working of democracy. The Pope asked the G8 countries to reaffirm their commitment...

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Jul 2009)

Dominic Hannigan: ------believe we need to see this report. We have many calls from all sides of the House for parties to engage in meaningful discussions about these proposals and we need to see them. If we do not see them we all know what will happen. This Government leaks worse than a national aquatic centre. Some journalists are going to receive off the record briefings, while others, who do not, will...

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Jul 2009)

Dominic Hannigan: -----and push for the publication of this report as soon as possible.

Dominic Hannigan: Will the Leader agree to an all-party motion from this House calling for it to be published?

Seanad: Defamation Bill 2006 [Seanad Bill amended by the Dáil] : Report and Final Stages (9 Jul 2009)

Dominic Hannigan: I am glad to see these amendments being made. I would like to see a review within the next few years, particularly of areas such as defamation of the dead. There are many cases where dead people have been defamed. The family that has been left behind must cope with this and must deal with the often scurrilous articles in the media. We could revisit that area when the Minister re-examines...
