The Minister of State indicated earlier that the State cannot create a system where one worker is treated more favourably than another and spoke about the desirability of having a register of collective agreements. Is it desirable that workers be able to access collective agreements?

Marie Sherlock: I am asking about the desire that workers should be able to access a collective agreement. Ireland stands apart from many other countries in not recognising the right of workers to engage in collective bargaining.

Marie Sherlock: No. They have the right to be benchmarked against other workers. Workers in Ireland do not have the right to be recognised for collective bargaining purposes. I take on board the Minister of State's point that it is desirable for workers to have access to collective agreements.
